Title:
touchpad stops generating mouse motion after a while (focal, lenovo
  yoga c930)

Status in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Ever since upgrading to focal from eoan, my trackpad stops tracking
  motion after a while. I'm just mousin' along switching apps and tabs;
selecting, cutting, pasting; doing all that usual stuff and suddenly
the cursor doesn't move. Tapping on the touchpad generates the
expected left- or right-click events. My external mouse still works.

This has happened with kernel 5.4.0-28 and 5.4.0-29; 5.3.0-46 was
  working just fine.

  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
  Release: 20.04
  $ uname -a
  Linux thorium 5.4.0-29-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 29 14:32:27 UTC 2020
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Messing around with the touchpad settings doesn't restore the touchpad to
operation, though it can enable/disable the mouse clicks.
Suspend and resume doesn't restore the touchpad.
  A reboot fixes the touchpad.

So now, I shall grudgingly reboot. :(

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1881421] [NEW] Thinkpad T440s trackpad and trackpoint stop working after resume from suspend

2020-05-30 Thread Sb
Public bug reported:

Hi, this is a sporadic issue that sometimes appears, sometimes not.
Usually once it starts happening it occurs on every suspend/resume cycle
until the system is rebooted. The trackpad and the red trackpoint nub
stop working after resume. This is on a Thinkpad T440s laptop currently
running a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04 with Gnome and no major
modifications.

Usually the trackpad can be fixed by unloading/loading the `psmouse`
module.

Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1702878] Re: Cant add folders to Search in Gnome Control Center

2017-10-30 Thread SB
Thanks for the information, I am using gnome-search-tool for my searches
and it is pretty good, Gnome Files I didnt use much. As for configuring
tracker I wasnt able to find any config files for it where I can tell it
to avoid indexing contents of files, perhaps I will submit a bug/feature
request with Gnome, I checked this:

https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/Tracker/Documentation/Configuration

But it didnt help and I think it refers to an old version of tracker.

I noticed that Ubuntu does not have tracker-gui package in its archives,
is GUI for tracker still maintained in any form? Where can I configure

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1702878] Re: Cant add folders to Search in Gnome Control Center

2017-10-30 Thread SB
sudo apt install tracker helped and now the icon is no longer greyed
out. I checked the bug you linked and I definitely think that search in
new Ubuntu Session needs to be improved, Unity dash searched for all my
files easily and they were always very quickly accessible, KDE does the
same with Baloo indexing, everything is easily found in KDE menu search.
That is the feature I miss the most from Unity on this new Gnome based
session, that and minimize on click option for dock.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1297144] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad X230] Invisible cursor after resume from suspend

I'm also facing this issue with light-locker and Intel graphics on
openSUSE Tumbleweed. It does not occur on openSUSE Leap (4.1 kernel), so
it is a regression.

[Lenovo ThinkPad X230] Invisible cursor after resume from suspend

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I am using the daily build of Xubuntu 14.04 x64 on a Lenovo Thinkpad
x230. If I wake up the computer after it spending some time in the
suspend state, the cursor will be invisible. The courser still works
(I can click on stuff and hover the invisible cursor over stuff), but
the little arrow is not visible. This bug showed up a few days ago
after an update. Putting the computer back in suspend state and
immediately waking it back up resolves the issue until the next time
the computer is put in suspend state for an extended period of time.

It is possible that this bug has something to do with Whisker Menu.
Sometimes when the courser is invisible it will still show up over
Whisker Menu. Most of the time it is invisible there too.

Description: Ubuntu Trusty Tahr (development branch)
  Release: 14.04

Bug description:
Cursor is visible at unlock screen either after returning from suspend
  or just locking.

After unlocking screen cursor is invisible.

Changing to vt1 then back to vt7 (ctrl+alt+f1 then ctrl+alt+f7) cursor
  returns

no matter if you suspend or sleep, to swap or disk when you return
from it, the mouse cursor is missing.you can still move the mouse
and you can see (because it highlights the window) as you move it
around. But the cursor is not displayed on the screen.

i am using a lenovo W540 laptop. I downloaded the latest beta on
  april 8 2016.

this is xubuntu using the xfce window manager.

the cursor does return if i log off and log back in, but that actually
defeats the purpose of going to sleep.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 833546] Re: iputils-arping conflicts with package arping because of same name

2016-01-21 Thread SB Technical Services
dino99,

A new version is no reason to close this bug, it still exists even for
the new version of the package (as far as I can see)

Also closing it as Invalid is not the correct course of action either,
the bug was and still is a Valid bug.

Reopening.

** Changed in: iputils (Ubuntu)

I need to scan for an ip address based on MAC address and wanted to

Unfortunatly there are TWO different versions of the program with the
exact same name. arping has dependancies with network-manager network-
manager-gnome and ubuntu-desktop making the package arping impossible
to install as iputils-arping is default. And iputils-arping doesn't
have the option to use a MAC address to arp to receive the IP address.

This discussion (from 2005) sums it up in the end as well. (why does this
issue still exist?)

What procedure needs to be followed in order to get one of the
programmers to rename their program, or to repackage the ubuntu
package arping so that it creates /usr/bin/arpingmac or something
similar instead of the naming conflict?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1516913] [NEW] can't install arping due to conflicts with iputils-arping

2015-11-17 Thread SB Technical Services
Public bug reported:

This bug needs to be raised against the arping and iputils-arping
packages.

arping and iputils-arping both provide a binary called arping.

It is impossible to install arping as iputils-arping conflicts with
arping (and many other packages do as well)

arping provides capabilities that iputils-arping does not including
pinging a mac address among other things.

As the 2 versions of arping use conflicting options and offer different
functionality they should not both have the same name.

Even worse ifupdown-extra depends on arping while the iputils-* requires
iputils-arping.
This results in ifupdown-exta being uninstallable on a standard desktop system
(network manager depends on iputils-arping)

There are a number of bugs around regarding this, some dating back over 10
years.
eg:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/arping/+bug/833546

Perhaps it is time for the two maintainers to merge their projects to solve
this for ever, or at least rename one of them.
simple solution would be rename arping package and binary to arp-ping

This system is Mint17 but this issue exits on all debian based systems
and probably other distros as well.

2015-09-21 Thread Sb
apport information

** Attachment added: "ProcEnviron.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1497675/+attachment/4470613/+files/ProcEnviron.txt

** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Description changed:

Hi, I just upgraded from Ubuntu 15.04 to 15.10 beta. Now when the LightDM
unity-greeter screen appears, it produces a loud distortion noise where the
Ubuntu drums should sound. It was working fine in 15.04 and all prior versions.
Apart from this sound works fine after logging into Ubuntu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1497792] [NEW] Unity crashes when trying to unlock disk partition from launcher

Public bug reported:

My disk has an NTFS partition, not mounted by default. I tried to remove

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1497674] [NEW] modemmanager can't be configured, claims upgrade from 15.04 to 15.10 beta failed

2015-09-19 Thread Sb
Public bug reported:

Hi, I just upgraded from 15.04 to 15.10 beta using the Ubuntu update-
manager tool. The update-manager got almost all the way to the end of
the installation of the new packages, and then claimed that the upgrade
failed because "modemmanager" package couldn't be configured.
Fortunately the upgrade seems to have actually worked, but the errors
are really ugly and shouldn't happen. After installation I ran another
"apt-get upgrade" and it configured modemmanager just fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1403140] Re: Consider setting default for Focus prevention windows to false

2015-08-02 Thread Sb
Wow, nice catch. This makes Unity 7 work 100 times better for me now,
and it solves some additional bugs in addition to the ones mentioned
above:

- Nautilus copy progress window doesn't hide or get lost altogether
- Apps that were hidden into the system tray (Clementine, SpiderOak, Pidgin,
etc.) used to restore to the dock, but not actually appear if another app was
maximized. This required restoring and then clicking on the dock icon to
actually make it visible. With focus prevention set to off it works correctly.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1403140] Re: Consider setting default for Focus prevention windows to false

2015-08-02 Thread Sb
And another:

- I always had trouble with multiple windows of the same application,
i.e. Firefox or Nautilus, upon clicking the dock icon and from there
selecting the desired window in the overview spread, it would never
appear on top if another one was maximized until I *again* clicked on
the dock and *again* clicked on the desired window in the overview
spread. Now with focus prevention turned OFF it all works perfectly.

This is like a major new bugfix release of Unity 7 now, resolving all
the major annoyances I had with Unity... Thumbs up!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1463169] [NEW] NetworkManager should disable IPv6 by default with private IP addresses

2015-06-08 Thread Sb
Public bug reported:

Where I live the only ISP is giving DSL customers a cheap Huawei DSL
modem/WiFI router combo device. Except that their customers know
absolutely nothing about configuring it, and when the rare customer does
ask to configure it they refuse to give them the username and password,
claiming that the device belongs to the ISP and only being loaned to
the customer. Unfortunately they provide it out of the box with IPv6
support enabled over the LAN. The connected WiFI devices still receive
an IPv4 address in the 192.168.1.x range, but some kind of IPv6 support
is enable for devices that support it. This does not pose a problem for
Windows, Android, and iOS devices, apparently because they don't support
IPv6.

But unfortunately Ubuntu devices don't work with this configuration. The device
connects to WiFI and receives a 192.168.1.x address with DNS and default
gateway correct, but it can't access the Internet. The way to fix it is:
1. Open NetworkManager Edit Connections for the connection
2. In the IPv6 Settings tab, set Method dropdown to Ignore
3. Disconnect and re-connect to WiFI, and it can access the Internet.

These steps are unnecessary. It seems like NetworkManager should always
disable IPv6 whenever it receives and address in the private IP space,
because nobody will use IPv6 on a LAN. This issue is becoming
increasingly common around the world, and it makes Ubuntu look
complicated to new users in comparison with the antiquated proprietary
systems that don't support IPv6 and therefore work great out of the box.

Thanks for considering this improvement.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 957879] Re: Wine tooltips don't disappear entirely from screen

2015-04-05 Thread Sb
OK, I have discovered that the culprit is the Compiz fade animation on
close for Tooltips.

=
Workaround:
=
In Compiz Settings Manager, under Animations, Close Animation tab, look for
the window match line for Fade that reads:

(type=Menu | PopupMenu | DropdownMenu | Combo | Dialog | ModalDialog |
Normal)

Edit that line and add to the end of it:

 !(class=\.exe$)

=
Resolution:
=
Please add this rule by default so as to avoid bothering Wine users. Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1438937] [NEW] Ubuntu indicator icons often open the app window behind a maximized window

2015-03-31 Thread Sb
Public bug reported:

Hi, I'm on Vivid 15.04 beta 2.

Many apps in the Unity system tray have an option to open the main app
from the tray icon. (For example Skype, Transmission, the indicator-
multiload system monitor, messaging apps from the messaging indicator,
and others.) The problem is that the app window usually does not have
focus, and frequently opens behind the maximized window that is
currently in view. So it requires going to the panel, Restore app
name, and then clicking on the app in the dock to make the window come
to the top. I think it should automatically come to the top and receive
focus when using a Restore option from a system tray option.

Thanks!

speed, with both a graph and a text readout on the panel. The problem
is that when my network speed changes from 9.9 kB/s to 10.0 kB/s, or
99.9 kB/s to 100.0 kB/s, the addition of additional digits makes the
location of the indicator to jump around, which in turns makes my
system tray items to the left of indicator-multiload also jump
around. The jitters are very distracting and unprofessional. Could
some additional padding be added to indicator-multiload to prevent
  this?

  Thanks a lot!

Impossible to open Empathy contact list window if already started with

Status in Chat app, and Telepathy user interface:
  New
Status in empathy package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
If I add Empathy to 'Startup Applications' to start it with '-h'
option, I'll never be able to open the contact list window.

  Tried:
  - If query with 'ps -ef | grep emapthy', I can see empathy is running.
  - If run 'empathy' from command line, the command exits without any output,
but nothing happens after that.
  - If choose 'Empathy Internet Messaging' from Unity Dashboard, nothing
happens.
  - If choose from the locked lens, I can see the icon blinks slowly (if you
know what I mean, I'm not native speaker of English), and then it stops
blinking, nothing happens after that.

However, if I didn't start Empathy with '-h' option, everything seems
  normal.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1061069]

2014-10-14 Thread Sb
I just wanted to chime in and say that the home:jsmeix repository for
Cups 1.75 is absolutely essential to connect to my wireless printer work
with Avahi on openSUSE. Many thanks! I wouldn't be able to use openSUSE
without this, and I'm probably not the only one.

In view of different user requirements (some need legacy support in the
CUPS 1.5 branch, others need modern but not bleeding-edge support in
CUPS 1.75, others will probably need the newest CUPS 2.0), would it be
possible to offer an official openSUSE Printing OBS repo with sub-repos
for CUPS 1.75 and 2.0? Thanks for taking this into consideration.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1327820] Re: Multi-monitor - Maximized Firefox windows cast shadows on adjacent monitors

2014-08-07 Thread SB
I see a similar problem. Eclipse on monitor 1 is maximized and the
window shadow bleeds over to monitor 2. The two monitors have been
placed next to each other so the bleeding happens where the two
monitors are logically joined.

Bug description:
I don't know if this is a Firefox bug or a Compiz one. Feel free to
reassign. What happens is that maximized Firefox windows with the
keyboard focus cast shadows on windows on adjacent monitors on a
multimonitor setup. It appears to happen only with Firefox, I will
report if I see it happen with other programs.

This is reported as fixed in bug #928807, so perhaps it wasn't
(fully), or it has regressed. Or maybe this is an unrelated problem.
I'm seeing it in Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit on a laptop with an NVidia
  GeForce GTX 765M.

Attached is a screenshot showing the problem. I have three monitors,
with the launcher placed on the middle one. The editor window is on my
third monitor and as you can see Firefox is casting a shadow on it.

Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “gvfs” source package in Precise:

Status in “gvfs” source package in Raring:

Bug description:
  Impact:
copies from/to samba share often end up hanging

  Test case:
  - visit a smb location in nautilus
  - copies data from/to it (some non trivial directories makes the issues
easier to trigger)
  - the copy should complete without hanging

  Regression potentiel:
Check that nautilus is still working correctly and than you don't have issues
copying data from/to remote locations

  ---

  Problem
  ===
Copying files to and from samba shares (this includes Windows shares) is
unreliable in Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 13.04 when using nautilus' integrated
samba client (gvfs-smb): The copy randomly hangs after a few files or a few GB.

  Workaround
  ==
Until gvfs-smb is fixed, use the kernel samba client (cifs) that works
reliably, is faster, but needs some terminal commands to get going:
  # sudo -s
  # mkdir /mnt/cifs
  # mount -t cifs -o user=YOUR_SAMBA_USER -o uid=YOUR_LINUX_USER
//SAMBA_SERVER/SAMBA_SHARE /mnt/cifs
It will ask for you password, you can then access the shared files at
/mnt/cifs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-09-01 Thread Sb
Just got bit by this bug. I have two laptops running 13.04. The faster
one with an Intel Core I5 is running x86, and the slower one is running
amd64. (I prefer x86, but the slower laptop had a different bug that
prevented me from using x86.) The fast laptop doesn't have any Nautilus
/ Samba / GVFS problems, but the slow laptop is completely broken for
file transfers. I don't know if this has to do with the speed or if
32bit vs 64bit makes the difference.

With regards to the workaround proposed in comment #171, thanks a lot
for the tip, that version of GVFS solved the problem. However, the best
way to implement the workaround is with APT pinning. To do this:

0. Add the Precise repos mentioned in comment #171

1. Create a file called gvfs-pin or whatever you want in
/etc/apt/preferences.d

2. Edit /etc/apt/preferences/gvfs-pin as follows:
Package: gvfs*
Pin: release a=precise
Pin-Priority: 999

3. sudo apt-get upgrade

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 918228] Re: Unable to access Trash, SMB shares, computer://, network:// etc. or automount

2012-01-19 Thread SB
Thanks, I figured as much. I'll definitely contact ricotz, but I'd be
very happy if anybody had an idea and could point me in the right
direction as to where the problem might be.

BTW, I've been wondering this a lot lately: is there a possibility to
mark bugs directly to packages coming from a ppa? Or only by writing a
mail to the ppa's owner?

I'm running Ubuntu Oneiric 64 bit, with all -updates, -proposed,

  I'm seeing the following problem:

I am able to mount/unmount volumes from the GNOME Disk Utility just
fine, but automounting the drives in Nautilus doesn't work. Neither
does accessing any of the virtual drives like trash://, computer://
network:// or any smb shares. The graphical error message simply says
action not supported (although all gvfs-related packages are
  installed).

I'm figuring this has to have something to do with a gvfs error, but
purging and reinstalling all gvfs- and nautilus-related packages
didn't remedy the situation. Unfortunately, I can't find any gvfs-
related logs to provide any error messages (where should I look?).
Using nautilus via gdb doesn't show any errors.

(Interestingly, mounting an external drive manually leads to it
showing up in nautilus under the Computer category and not under
  Devices as before.)

This is especially a pain in the ass because some programs like Deja
Dup seem to rely on gvfs information, so even if I mount my external
USB drive manually, Deja Dup will not recognize it and not start the
  backup.

I think this bug started appearing after a recent update from ricotz'
testing ppa, but I'm not sure and I'd rather not go through the
arduous process of rolling back to the stock packages if there's any
  other way to fix this.

Sorry I can't provide any more information right now. If you hint me
in the right direction I can probably provide more details.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 918228] [NEW] Unable to access Trash, SMB shares, computer://, network:// etc. or automount

2012-01-18 Thread SB
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu Oneiric 64 bit, with all -updates, -proposed,
-backports, -extra etc sources and also the gnome3-team ppa as well as
ricotz' gnome shell testing ppa enabled.

I'm seeing the following problem:

I am able to mount/unmount volumes from the GNOME Disk Utility just
fine, but automounting the drives in Nautilus doesn't work. Neither does
accessing any of the virtual drives like trash://, computer://
network:// or any smb shares. The graphical error message simply says
action not supported (although all gvfs-related packages are
installed).

I'm figuring this has to have something to do with a gvfs error, but
purging and reinstalling all gvfs- and nautilus-related packages didn't
remedy the situation. Unfortunately, I can't find any gvfs-related logs
to provide any error messages (where should I look?). Using nautilus via
gdb doesn't show any errors.

(Interestingly, mounting an external drive manually leads to it showing
