[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1838151] Re: Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing wide band speech support (Bluetooth A2DP codecs).

2021-11-17 Thread Stanislav German-Evtushenko
While waiting for the next LTS version of Ubuntu I was able to fix the
mic issue on 20.04 by installing pipewire (followed this guide
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1330395/newly-installed-
ubuntu-20-04-bluetooth-headset-sound-and-mic-not-working/1340889#1340889
except I installed wireplumber instead of media session as the latter
one was not able to remember the chosen profile)

Bug description:
Bluetooth HSP/HFP audio quality is poor on Ubuntu comparative to all
other major platforms (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS).

Modern Bluetooth headsets (such as the Bose QC series headphones, many
others) are capable of using HFP 1.6 with mSBC 16kHz audio encoding.
As it currently stands, Ubuntu defaults to only supporting HSP
headsets using 8kHz CVSD, and is incapable of supporting HFP 1.6 at
  this time.

The ChromiumOS team recently tackled this issue -
  https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843048

Their efforts may assist in bringing this to Ubuntu, however it
appears that there are quite a lot of differences considering they
have developed their own audio server solution etc.

The Bluetooth Telephony Working Group published the HFP 1.6 spec in
  May 2011 -
  https://www.bluetooth.org/docman/handlers/downloaddoc.ashx?doc_id=238193

Patches have been proposed in the past for this issue to the kernel
  and PulseAudio:

  Kernel: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg76982.html

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1484988] [NEW] Android smartphone is recognized as MTP device only on 50% of hardware with Ubuntu 14.04

2015-08-14 Thread Stanislav German-Evtushenko
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Android device Philips (idVendor=0bb4, idProduct=2008) is recognized as
MTP device only on some hardware with Ubuntu 14.04 while not recognized
on other. Ubuntu is booted on all hardware from the same official
livecd, i.e. not installed and not customized.

For example, it is recognized on Dell XPS M1330 and not recognized on Latitude
E6220.
There is a work around for this particular device however it is only suitable
for your own PC. There should be a general fix for this.

Here is a work around:
echo 'ATTR{idVendor}==0bb4, ATTR{idProduct}==2008, SYMLINK+=libmtp-%k,
MODE=660, GROUP=audio, ENV{ID_MTP_DEVICE}=1, ENV{ID_MEDIA_PLAYER}=1' |
sudo tee /etc/udev/rules.d/69-libmtp.rules

Also I have checked the same with Ubuntu 15.04 livecd and it worked on
both laptops out of the box.

Best regards,
Stanislav

Installing ttf-vlgothic will probably help.

Title:
Square boxes instead of menu labels in Japanese Libreoffice

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: libreoffice

In December I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my new laptop. I chose
Japanese as the language of both the OS and the installer, so there
should be no doubt that all relevant fonts have been installed. When
Ubuntu 11.04 was released, I made an upgrade to 11.04 which replaced
Open Office by Libre Office. Since the OS is in Japanese, so is Libre
Office. The bug is that all Japanese characters in the menus are
replaced by square boxes; the only Japanese characters I see are 無題
(untitled) in the window title. This makes the menus very hard to use.

I'm attaching an example from Libre Office Calc.
