This has been fixed by some (recent?) updates to Ubuntu 17.10. I can't
unfortunately tell which one exactly, but the issue is gone.

After reinstalling Natty from scratch I did not get this problem any
longer. After upgrading to Oneiric it appeared again. So yes, it's still
