I see the problem here as well in 17.04.
The solution with x-systemd.automount mount option in fstab seems to
help.

Can't verify this behaviour on more detailed testing.
Setting hosts in nsswitch.conf to dns only and specifying DNS-server and
search domains in the interface configuration does not necessarily
resolve the hostname, even when searching with the fqdn.
This behaviour alone is not what seems to be
Public bug reported:
The search domains saved to e.g. "/etc/NetworkManager/system-
connections/Kabelnetzwerkverbindung 1" are processed in reversed order.
E.g., an entry like:
dns-search=ifis.example.org;idb.example.org;ips.example.org;
searches for a host named hostname.ips.example.org
