   * System with glxinfo installed (in mesa-utils) will show glxinfo's
result first for Details - Overview - Graphics info in Unity

   * System without glxinfo will still parse Xorg's log for Details
  - Overview - Graphics info in Unity Control Center.

  [Regression Potential]

   * Should be minimal, the info showed in glxinfo is more accurate.

  [Original Bug Info]

In some of OEM's AMD platforms,

open System setting-Details-Graphics from control center,

find the Graphics Driver show VESA: XX strings ,

not as accurate as what glxinfo -l | grep OpenGL renderer string
  shows.

The VESA: string displayed in System Settings--Details-Graphics was
because
unity-control-center will find the driver information via:

  (1) parse /var/log/Xorg.0.log and find VESA VBE OEM Product: String

  (2) if (1) is not found, parse the result of glxinfo -l and find
OpenGL renderer string, and use this info as the string being shown.

There're some of AMD's fglrx driver will show VESA VBE OEM Product:
  X string in /var/log/Xorg.0.log,

I've asked AMD and their reply is that the VESA BIOS message is traced
by VBEInit (libvbe.so) , which is out of fglrx’s control.

Curently this VESA:X string instead of the more accurate string
from glxinfo was being shown in the panel.

I think Use glxinfo's information (when available) first is more
  accurate.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1471708] Re: SRU: For skylake system, u-s-d cause a black screen when resume from S3 via Lid Close

2015-07-14 Thread Tim Chen
@Alberto

It was originally a quick workaround for the possible race condition so
could you help to modify the code with what Iain had suggested? Totally
agree that making it asynchronous, adding more verbose log and finding
out the root cause are better ways to fix this issue.

Sometimes system turns a black screen when resume from S3 via Lid Close
It only has cursor on screen but still can switch to tty1.

  1. install Ubuntu 14.04.2 3.19+ kernel and boot to OS

  [Regression Potential]
Low. Killing touchscreen mapping after 3 seconds should not affect any other
input device.

  Details:

  unity-settings-deamon will call xinput --map-to-output 11 eDP1 at
background,
and it's being blocked so only cursor will show on screen.

  1. Switch to tty1 when this happen
  2. Login with user account on tty1.
  3. Use DISPLAY=:0 xrandr on commandline you'll see it's being blocked.

Since xinput is being blocked for some unknown reason (in gdb it shows
polling on xcb_connect_to_fd() in XOpenDisplay() ),

a possible workaround is to set a timeout for xinput in u-s-d.

Bug description:

I think Use glxinfo's information (when available) first is more
  accurate.

Bug description:
Running with the proprietary nvidia drivers in an optimus config
works, but enabling reflection or rotation on the intel screen causes
  a black screen to appear.

  [Impact]
   * Causes a black screen if rotation or reflection is enabled.

  [Test Case]
   * Run xrandr --output SOMEOUTPUT --rotation left
  - Expected: Screen should rotate, or the call should fail.
  - Bad behavior: Succeeds, but causes a black screen.

  [Regression Potential]
   * The affected codepaths have reflection and rotation disabled for gpu
screens. Another fix could be fixing reflection/rotation, but that will be more
involved and likely require driver fixes.

  [Other Info]
   * N/A

With up to date Gutsy, tracker is installed by default.
Yet the Search for Files.. entry on the places menu still launches

When you install Beagle, beagle-search takes over that menu-entry in the
places menu.
See also, the bug about that:

This wishlist-bug was fixed, and I think, considering the choice to

   * Currently, the power option system sleep settings menu in Ubuntu precise
has the following options:
     5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour and don't suspend.

The plan is to add an option for 20 minutes and 2 hours options to
  give the user morefine-grained controls.

This request came from OEM projects, requested additional options to
be add in the power option system sleep settings menu.

  [Test Case]

   * Under the session-indicator choose System Settings
     -- Power

   * For the Susend when inactive for question,
this patch will add two 20 minutes and 2 hours items

   * The strings have been already been uploaded and translators warned

  [Regression Potential]

   * This patch will not change the user's originall settings, only add
additional options when user want to choose different suspend time.
   * This patch is already tested on some OEM projects.
   * The patch now submitted in Trusty (14.04) bzr devel branch.

** Description changed:

idle for 30 secs.

+
+In some OEM projects, in order to fulfill the OEM requests for Energy

could we just modify /usr/sbin/guest-account ,
add an autostart script in the guest $HOME/.config/autostart/

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]

Impact: The internal speaker does not show up in the sound settings,
which causes this to block certification.

Test case: With the affected machines, open sound settings without
headphones plugged in. If the Internal Speaker does not show up, the
  bug is present.

Regression risk (Quantal): Cirrus is a rare codec, mostly used in
macbooks. Upstream has reviewed and blessed the patch.

Regression risk (Precise): These machines are quirked individually and
won't affect other machines (and even if they did, the worst thing
that could happen would be a speaker output that shouldn't be
  there).

This is due to the Internal Speaker Phantom Jack kctrl not being
  created.

the same issue occurs in the following sysyems:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1037483] Re: [SRU] Needs NVIDIA driver 304.43 [HW-Certification blocker]

2013-01-21 Thread Tim Chen
The system, Dell Precision M4700, still has the suspend problem with installed
ii nvidia-current-updates 304.64-0ubuntu0.1
NVIDIA binary Xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU library
ii nvidia-settings-updates304.43-0ubuntu0.2
Tool of configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver

After the installation, the screen resolution is still the minimal. The
driver seems failed to install.

I see there's interesting log when installing as below, not sure if it related
to this bug.

Bug description:
   Read me first

If you're suffering from one of the following problems:

   1) In the sound settings dialog, when you plug your headphones into
the designated 3.5 mm jack, there is a Headphones device correctly
shown, but when you unplug it, there is no Speaker device shown,
even though you have internal speakers on your computer.

   2) In the sound settings dialog, when you plug your external
microphone into the designated 3.5 mm jack, there is a Microphone
(or similar) device correctly shown, but when you unplug it, there is
no Internal Mic device shown, even though you have an internal mic
  on your computer.

If so, please try the workaround in comment #32. IF AND ONLY IF that
is working for you, please attach alsa info (see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo ) to this bug, together with
the name of your machine (e g Dell Latitude D620). I'll try to
include it in a list of devices that we have to manually enable and
release it as an update to 12.04.

Thanks! - and sorry for causing the bug in the first place :-/

  needed) :

  # Toshiba A200
  # MSI X360
  # Lenovo 3000 Y410

   SRU Justification ===
First, sorry if this bug is a bit messy, but I think it would be even more
messy if I spread the information across several bugs. Here's some explanation:

The long-term fix is already in Quantal, because we backported the
Phantom Jack support into Ubuntu's 3.5 kernel. Together with that
comes a small PulseAudio patch, http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
  audio-dev/pulseaudio/ubuntu.precise/revision/519/debian/patches/0624
-alsa-mixer-Add-Phantom-Jack-support.patch - the reason I want this in
12.04 is to provide a better experience for users running the quantal
kernel on precise, i e, the backport kernel coming with 12.04.2.

In addition to that, while doing an SRU I could just as well add a few
more quirks for affected machines showing up after the previous SRU,
so that is now done in http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-
  dev/pulseaudio/ubuntu.precise/revision/520/debian/patches/0625-alsa-
  mixer-Add-a-few-more-machines-to-internal-mic-w.patch

  [Impact]
Several laptops (see above list) are missing mostly internal mics, but
sometimes also speakers in the Sound Settings / PulseAudio. This leads to an
inability to control volume for these devices, and often not being able to use
them at all.

  [Test Case]
  * Have an affected machine
  * Notice that when your mic is unplugged, the internal mic is correctly
shown in the sound settings

  [Regression Potential]
The quirk-style fix only affects the machines above. The long-term fix
affects only users of a newer (quantal or later) kernel.

I have an DELL Inspiron 6400. As it seems ubuntu precise beta1 thinks it
has a digital ouput. In the audio settings it says Play sound through:
  »Digital Output (S/PDIF)«

As you can see there →
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6400/en/om/specs.htm#wp1054816
  it has no S/PDIF output.

The audio Settings doesn't let me change the mode.
Sometime the system sets the mode to »Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output« but
the drop-down list menu is grayed out so I can't change it.

If I plug in and out my headphones the system changes the mode to »Analog
Stereo Output«
and I can hear Sound again.

If you need more Information please let me know.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1086345] Re: Quantal-LTS-stack: Showing low-resolution screen on shutdown/reboot

2013-01-14 Thread Tim Chen
We got some haswell platforms here and met same issues.

It keeps showing the warning
plymouthd: intel_bufmgr_gem.c:2783: drm_intel_bufmgr_gem_init: Assertion `0'
failed.
in the log,
however there's no such code in the libdrm-ltsq2.

Track it a bit It seems that libdrm-ltsq-intel1 didn't replaced libdrm-intel1
then I repack libdrm from the quantal's branch for precise ,
and it fixed the issue. the logo did appear again.

I'm thinking maybe there should be a plymouth lts version which links to
libdrm-ltsq2 or those libdrm-ltsq2 version should replace all the old
version of libdrm.

  Quantal-LTS-stack: Showing low-resolution screen on shutdown/reboot

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Hardware is an Hashwell SDP with an Intel SSD. Fresh install from
12.04.1 alternate image, then added the quantal-lts kernel and the
  x-stack (ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/q-lts-backport, pulled via xserver-xorg-
lts-quantal meta package). Monitor is connected to VGA.

With the new stack graphics on VGA does actually work and the system
snaps from the grub-efi prompt to lightdm in a blink (2s at most which
probably can be attributed to the Intel SSD). Everything is fine and
the system definitely is running in a high resolution mode.

However when shutting down or rebooting, the system drops into a
screen telling me it is running in low-resolution mode instead of
showing plymouth (or the terminal). The system will continue to shut
down or reboot even without pressing the ok button, but it can be done
for a bit and then would show the next screen about how to resolve the
issue. I was not quick or daring enough to go on from the second
  screen.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1038084] Re: Bluetooth devices are muted after suspend/resume

2013-01-07 Thread Tim Chen
Hello,
I have tried two systems in our lab, but both of them have no built-in BT
module, so I can't verify this issue.

Title:
Bluetooth devices are muted after suspend/resume

Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “pulseaudio” source package in Precise:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]
Impact: Users need to manually unmute bluetooth devices after a S3 cycle.
Note that this is probably some kind of race between pulseaudio and bluez - so
the bug does is not consistenly reproducible.

Testcase: Connect a bluetooth audio device and play back some music
through pulseaudio to the device. Then suspend/resume. Now check if
the device has suddenly become muted. If so, the bug is not fixed.

Regression potential: As the bluetooth audio devices are self-powered
units, there shouldn't be a risk that this would lead to pops and
clicks on S3 (which was the original reason for adding this distro-
specific script in the first place).

Like bug 665314, but only for Bluetooth. We're splitting them up because I
fix only Bluetooth devices for 12.04. This is because a regression was reported
when dropping the script completely.

Regression risk (Precise): These machines are quirked individually and
won't affect other machines (and even if they did, the worst thing
that could happen would be a speaker output that shouldn't be
  there).

This is due to the Internal Speaker Phantom Jack kctrl not being
  created.

2012-12-19 Thread Tim Chen
I have verified it on Quantal, kernel 3.5.0-21.32, but bugs remains, internal
speaker interface disappears, but sound actually works.
@kentb: you want me to test with updated pulseaudio under Quantal? The
pulseaudio I installed on the system is 2.1-0ubuntu4.

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]
Impact: Some hardware have no automatic jack detection for headphone to
userspace, so when you plug headphones in, your media keys and indicator will
still control the speaker's volume. This affects several machines currently
being enabled by the HWE team.

Testcase: Have an affected machine, i e one that has a Front
Headphone Jack kcontrol (as seen by amixer contents), open gnome
sound settings, and plug headphones in. If the bug is fixed, the
headphone port will now be visible and selected.

Regression potential: If there is a Front Headphone Jack, but for
some reason this is non-functional due to a kernel driver or hardware
problem, there is a chance that the headphone port, which was manually
  selectable, now is always invisible.

Many desktops have headphone on the front and line outs on the back.
Sometimes this means that the alsa kcontrol for the headphone jack is labelled
Front Headphone Jack, but the volume controls are only Headphone Playback
Volume, i e, without the Front prefix.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1086720] Re: After installed of fglrx or fglrx-update, can't boot to desktop

2012-12-11 Thread Tim Chen
After the linux-headers-3.5.0-17-generic installed and reinstalled fglrx
fglrx-amdcccle, system is able to boot to desktop without problem.

I see there're two problem.
1. It seems linux-headers-3.5.0-17-generic is not installed by default
2. The fglrx package finishes installation without the necessary header, and
there's no error occurred to user. So user doesn't know the driver failed the
installation actually.

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification (Quantal)]

Impact: The internal speaker does not show up in the sound settings,
which causes this to block certification.

Test case: With the affected machines, open sound settings without
headphones plugged in. If the Internal Speaker does not show up, the
  bug is present.

Regression risk: Cirrus is a rare codec, mostly used in macbooks.
Upstream has reviewed and blessed the patch.

This is due to the Internal Speaker Phantom Jack kctrl not being
  created.

Bug description:
Open the system setting-Details-Graphics, find the Graphics Driver
show VESA: XX strings , not the accurate information from glxinfo
-l | grep OpenGL renderer string

The VESA: string displayed in System Settings--Details-Graphics is
because
gnome-control-center will find the driver information via:

  (1) parse /var/log/Xorg.0.log and find VESA VBE OEM Product: String

  (2) if (1) is not found, parse the result of glxinfo -l and find
OpenGL renderer string, and use this info as the string being shown.

There're some of AMD's fglrx driver will show VESA VBE OEM Product: X
string in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
so this VESA:X string instead of the more accurate string from glxinfo
will being shown in the panel.

Use glxinfo's information (when available) first is more accurate.
  A proposed patch is attached.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1055874] Re: Automatic sleep settings are not followed precisely

2012-10-11 Thread Tim Chen
@sparhawkthesecond

what is your idle-delay ?
org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay may affect on this.

as I said in #2, idle-delay setting must be same with
sleep-display-(ac|battery).
I think g-c-c UI have this check but if you use gsettings to cheange the value
then it may not that easy to find out this issue.

settings. These are clearly values that are low for normal usage, but
this bug is very frustrating if one attempts to troubleshoot unrelated
automatic-sleep bugs. Firstly, I think I missed the case when
automatic sleep might have worked. Secondly, it increases the time it
takes to troubleshoot by a lot.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1055874] Re: Automatic sleep settings are not followed precisely

2012-10-04 Thread Tim Chen
@Sparhawk
what's the result of
#gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power idle-dim-time
?

idle-dim-time will affect the time you set on those settings, you need
to plus the dim time.

if idle-dim-time is 30, and sleep-display-ac is 60
your monitor will turn off after 90 secs inactive.

and whenever you set sleep-display-ac by gsettings , you also need to
set

[org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power]
sleep-display-ac
sleep-display-battery
and

[org.gnome.desktop.session]
idle-delay

these 3 values need to be same in the gsettings.

2012-10-04 Thread Tim Chen
@Sparhawk
and if your sleep-inactive-(ac|battery)-type is suspend

the actual suspend time will be

sleep-inactive-(ac|battery)-timeout + idle-dim-time

but if your sleep-display-(ac|battery) sleep-
inactive-(ac|battery)-timeout

the actual suspend time will be

sleep-display-(ac|battery) + idle-dim-time

hope these explains the default behavior in ubuntu now.

btw, this should related to gnome-setttings-daemon not gnome-power-
manager , and it's indeed has some design issue,

there is a upstream fix already submitted. (
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=668703 )

but not yet in precise (and quantel), I'd assume this is going to be
changed in 13.04.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1040456] [NEW] System info tab for graphic info should use glxinfo -l 's result first

2012-08-23 Thread Tim Chen
Public bug reported:

Open the system setting-Details-Graphics, find the Graphics Driver
show VESA: XX strings , not the accurate information from glxinfo -l
| grep OpenGL renderer string

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 869799] Re: [Dell inspiron M5110] no output while external VGA is connected

2011-12-14 Thread Tim Chen
The output log from xrandr.
log above is before the external display plugged, after
that is after external display connected.

-
If I connected the external monitor first, then boot the system. The external
display is ok.
If I switch to console mode(ctrl+alt+F1) then come back to x-windows. The
external display is ok.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 869799] Re: [Dell inspiron M5110] no output while external VGA is connected

2011-12-14 Thread Tim Chen
If I changed the mode with below command, the external display looks good. But
the bottom of main display of laptop will be cut-off.
xrandr --output --mode 1440x900.

mode 1366x768 is ok with command: xrandr --output --mode 1336x768.

No matter which mode it switched to, the external monitor can display
correctly.
