[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1996905] Re: Minimise window fails first time

2022-11-17 Thread Tim Passingham
I removed libreoffice-gnome and -gtk3, and the problem went away. My
version now shows:

Version: 7.4.2.3 / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 40(Build:3)
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: x11
Locale: en-GB (en_GB.UTF-8); UI: en-GB
Ubuntu package version: 1:7.4.2~rc3-0ubuntu0.22.04.1~lo1
Calc: threaded

It's not as user friendly.

Note that my original problem only seems to occur when I open the start
center already full screen from the last time I opened it.

I mean the button that makes the window smaller, not the one that makes

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1729433] Re: LibreOffice doesn't remember window size when running under Wayland

2021-07-27 Thread Tim Passingham
I'm on ubuntu 21.04, wayland. LO now opens files almost full size, but
not quite within the screen size, slightly to the right, so I have to
move the window (using the top bar) before I can properly resize it, and
I have to do this every single time.

This seems to have changed in the most recent LO update. I have now
uninstalled LO gtk3 and gnome, which makes things slightly better. Having done
that I am now on:

2021-07-01 Thread Tim Passingham
I have the same problem on ubuntu 21.04 wayland. Logging on under
ubuntu xorg fixes it.

Windows sometimes don't close properly, and trying to exit can trigger a
logoff. Manually logging off and back on fixes it for a while, until
another window sticks.

Thunderbird version 1:78.11.0+build1-0ubuntu0.21.04.2

Wayland is almost unusable because of this.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1923632] Re: Screen flickering

2021-04-17 Thread Tim Passingham
For lswh read lshw - sorry!

This problem is pretty bad on my system - it becomes unusable after a
while. I will have to avoid any kernel upgrades.

Given that the problem seems to happen after a while, and then gets
worse and worse, I wonder whether it is some sort of corruption issue
that gets worse as the corruption grows. It doesn't seem to be a
fundamental graphics issue that happens every time a certain set of
actions takes place. That probably means it will be difficult to track
down, and may vary a lot between systems.

I'm willing to try and help analyse the issue, but I have no idea what
data I could provide to help.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1923632] Re: Screen flickering

2021-04-16 Thread Tim Passingham
I have the same problem on that kernel (ubuntu 20.10), and on the update
to 5.8.0-50.55. I have gone back to 5.8.0-48.54 and it has stabilised.
I get all sorts of different effects. Blocks of text being partially
blank, whole menu boxes being blank, and so on. This usually happened
after the system has been on for a few hours, so I initially suspected
hardware, but reverting to 5.8.0-48 fixed it.

The worst effected are browsers (Firefox, Chrome and Brave) possibly
only when not full screen, but parts of the application icon toolbar and
others parts flicker on and off as well.

I tried wayland, but it was no better, so an x.org update may not help
(I can't see one available at present)

I'm using "Intel® HD Graphics 4600 (HSW GT2) graphics", on "Intel® Core™
i7-4770T CPU @ 2.50GHz × 8". No special drivers. Monitor connected via
HDMI.

Copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice and Wine apps

Status in Mutter:

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:

Status in mutter source package in Focal:

Bug description:
In Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 there was a bug that caused copy and paste
operations to fail pretty often: the text that was pasted was not the
text that was just copied. See the long discussion at bug #1852183.
The bug was recently marked closed, since the package mutter -
3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 landed in focal-updates and makes the bug
  occur much less frequently.

Unfortunately the bug still exists, and is not difficult to reproduce.
I am running Ubuntu 20.04 and have the new 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1
version of mutter. I just opened two LibreOffice Writer windows side
by side, and repeatedly selected some text in the left window, copied
it, then attempted to paste it into the right window. In my
experiment, approximately 1 in every 20 paste operations failed: it
did not paste the text that was just copied, but instead the text that
  was copied before that.

Now, an error rate of 1 in 20 may not seem so bad. On the other hand,
if you spend all day writing a document and copy and paste dozens of
times during the day, then you may hit this bug multiple times per day
(as I have been recently), which is a significant annoyance.

I tested in LibreOffice since that is where I have seen the bug most
often, but I have also seen it occur in other applications as well.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1896332] Re: SRU 3.36.6

2020-09-29 Thread Tim Passingham
Hi. My mistake. I had, some time ago, needed to install one package
from focal-proposed, and to do this had turned off letting synaptic etc
from showing all proposed updates by adding a file in
/etc/apt/preference.d. I'd forgotten about this.

sudo aptitude -t focal-proposed

showed that mutter updates did indeed exist, so I manually installed
mutter/focal-proposed and gir1.2-mutter-6/focal-proposed (which each
installed one other file).

So far all my testing has been good - no cut/copy/paste errors.

Sadly, ubuntu 20.04 has just released 3.36.4, which doesn't fix the

text that was just copied.

Adam - thanks for the clarification. I'm afraid for some of us ordinary
users the subtleties of 'fix released' but not released in ubuntu to the
outside world evaded me. Sorry.

I sincerely hope the fix works!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

2020-07-04 Thread Tim Passingham
It is not fixed in mutter 3.36.3 using libreoffice. I have checked and
o have 3.36.3 installed (and rebooted) and tested again. It failed
first time.

It seems to me that there is something very odd going on here. How was
the fix tested?

This is second time it has been 'fixed' but users have found that it is
still failing. I really do wonder whether the source of the problem has
been correctly identified.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

2020-06-28 Thread Tim Passingham
Marcello - yes indeed.

For me it is worst with spreadsheets, where I copy a lot of data
regularly. For instance when keeping a record of regular measurements, I
copy the previous item's formulae each time. I only started to realise
that a lot of my sheets were corrupted in early April.

With text I usually realise it is wrong quite quickly. With data and
formulae it can be much less obvious.

I was, once, in the IT business, so am not reluctant to get involved
with reporting issues, and am also happy to test. Unfortunately I don't
know nearly enough about modern systems to be able to debug or fix them
(now where's that GA SPC 16/50?).

I fail to understand why this is not being regarded as a critical bug.
I hope that spreadsheets on Ubuntu are not ever being used for important
stuff, are they?

2020-06-25 Thread Tim Passingham
I am still really struggling to understand why this is not a major issue
amongst ubuntu users. If I use the default interface I get driven crazy
several times a day with mainly libreoffice various applications,
copying and pasting and getting the wrong data.

Can it be that there are either very few focal desktop users, or
libreoffice users, or is it something else more specific to some
systems?, or does no one ever copy and paste any more, or do people just
not complain? It's so fundamental for me.

I'm still torn between slow wayland and buggy gnome.

I don't suppose you could explain some of that could you? The install
command is too complex for a simple fellow like myself - from the cut
command on (I get as far as the selection of upgradable items with a
name that includes the version number).

I don't think I'm in danger of getting updates I don't want, since the
instructions in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed say they
prevent that.

Or have I misunderstood?

2020-06-08 Thread Tim Passingham
Marcello. I switched to Wayland. For a while now I have noticed
Libreoffice, wine applications, and some others being irritatingly slow,
and wondered why. It's Wayland! Switching back to the normal ubuntu
desktop has bought speed back, but brought the bug back with it.

I can't help wondering if all software has got too complicated these
days. One might think something as basic as this was simple to find and
fix. Clearly not.

I guess I'll just have to take the performance hit and hope that the
almost defunct Wayland has no other major issues. I use copy and paste
a lot in spreadsheets as well as in documents. In spreadsheets this has
created several errors which took me a long time to find and resolve.

Daniel, sorry, but as far as I am concerned this is an ubuntu bug. That
ubuntu uses, as a fundamental component (not just an add-on), something
else is surely an ubuntu problem?

If my car breaks down I don't search for the supplier of a component, I
go to the car maker. I do not know if other linux flavours use the same
components. I am just an ubuntu user.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

2020-05-25 Thread Tim Passingham
Can this get escalated in any way?

Surely such a basic operation as cut/copy and paste should be totally
reliable, as it has been on all the systems I have used since 1970. A
fundamental inability to do what a user requests is critical, in my
view.

I think I will have to ask people in the IT media what they think if
this doesn't get sorted very soon.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

2020-05-23 Thread Tim Passingham
I now realise a couple of my Calc spreadsheets have been corrupted
because of faulty copy and paste. The context menu is definitely the
worst offender, but now any regular copy and paste (eg weekly or monthly
readings of various things) have to be double-checked.

For me, this is a Major bug. To be honest I can't quite believe it is
happening.

Having upgraded to 20.04 rather than installed fresh, I will take this
opportunity to switch to Wayland, for a while at least.

2020-05-21 Thread Tim Passingham
Oh dear. Davide, you are right. I habitually use keyboard control keys
for cut, copy and paste, and had to try quite hard to get the problem.

Using the context menu (within one writer document) it fails for almost
every other try.

Using the main menu it rarely fails, but it did occasionally.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on Ubuntu 20.04

2020-05-21 Thread Tim Passingham
I tried to reproduce bug #1852183 with just one writer document, and
failed to do so after the mutter update. Maybe I didn't try hard enough,
but it didn't re-occur after many trials in one writer document.

However, I have now tested copying between two writer documents, and
reproduced the same problem. It took me many cope/cut and pastes (well
over 20) until it started to happen, and then it started to happen quite
frequently, say 1 in 3 or 4.

It seems from several reports that this is a slippery problem, affecting
different users in slightly different ways. To me that implies there
could be timing and/or load issues affecting the process. However, I am
but a simple user, long past my techie days.

I don't understand how the previous report can have been marked as
fixed, since Adam Dingle had already said it didn't fully fix the
problem. No matter. The bug still exists.

2020-05-20 Thread Tim Passingham
Ethany - is there something else I can do? I've installed the proposed
update, retested, and so far all seems well (as I said in #159).

It's difficult to test and report on a problem which doesn't happen
every time you do something. I never found a pattern to it, just when
it did start to happen it was infuriating :-)

As to why more people haven't reported and retested, I don't know.
Maybe Libreoffice Fresh users on ubuntu 20.04 are still quite rare?

2020-05-19 Thread Tim Passingham
I used 'developer options' to install all the proposed updates last
night. I could not find a way to just update the 4 mutter files - it
insisted on updating many files including the kernel.

So far, so good. I've done 30 or so cut/copy and paste with no errors
so far.

I wouldn't know how to back out of all these updates, so I'm just
crossing my fingers. If someone could explain for others how to install
only the 4 updates that would help people using more critical systems
than mine.

I hope this fix (even if only partial as suggested above) makes it into
focal ASAP.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) with LibreOffice is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04 (see comment 93)

2020-05-18 Thread Tim Passingham
I have just started having this problem, having updated to 20.04. So
far I have only encountered it with libreoffice writer, about 30% of the
time I copy/cut and paste (whether by menu or keyboard shortcuts). I do
this a lot due to the nature of my writing.

This is the first time since I moved to ubuntu many years ago that I
have encountered a bug that causes me to wonder whether to continue with
it. It's driving me crazy every hour of every day. To those who are
unsure if it is a real problem, there's a video of it happening at
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=133029

It has been said that the vanilla build of libreoffice doesn't have this
problem, so I'll have to try that. Until my report #1879078 was marked
as a duplicate of this bug I had no idea that it was so common in
ubuntu. In my view this is really serious.

I my case I am on X11, and the problem affects Libreoffice Version: 6.4.3.2
Build ID: 1:6.4.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.4; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;
Locale: en-GB (en_GB.UTF-8); UI-Language: en-GB
Calc: threaded

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  I'm running LibreOffice 6.3.2.2 on Ubuntu 19.10.

In this environment, copy/cut/paste often fails. Specifically, the
paste command sometimes does not paste the text that was cut/copied
most recently. Instead, it pastes text that was cut/copied at some
  prior time.

  [ Test case ]

  1. Use use libreoffice writer/calc
  2. Copy text around
  3. Paste it and ensure it always work

  [ Regression potential ]

Copy/paste won't work as expected, for non-text types

  -

I use LibreOffice Writer a lot, and I now see this problem very often, i.e.
many times every day.

There is some discussion of the problem here:

     https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/213510/copypaste-issues-
  libreoffice-calc/

Several posters there say that they are also using Ubuntu 19.10.

Ubuntu 19.10 includes Mutter 3.34, which has a new clipboard manager:

     https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item=GNOME-3.34
  -Clipboard-Manager

It seems like that could be related.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1879078] [NEW] copy and paste not working properly

2020-05-16 Thread Tim Passingham
Public bug reported:

In 20.04 cut/copy and paste does not work reliably in Writer.

This has been reported in bugzilla, but seems to only affect ubuntu
20.04.

See https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=133029

One report included a video.

My report there said:

I copy and paste, and get the previous copy, not the latest one.
Sometimes the last line gets duplicated in a very peculiar way, such
that if I edit it the duplicate gets edited as well. It is very strange.

I'm using Version: 6.4.3.2
Build ID: 1:6.4.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.4; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;
Locale: en-GB (en_GB.UTF-8); UI-Language: en-GB

And have also tried the pre-release of 6.4.4.

This is using the ubuntu ppa versions. It's really quite a serious
problem for anyone using Writer (and maybe other modules).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1869561] Re: Libreoffice Help does not work

2020-05-08 Thread Tim Passingham
Sebastien - that works for me - I now get the local web-based help (I'd
still prefer the old fashioned sort, but never mind!),

With the new xcd it reports it is:

Version: 6.4.3.2
Build ID: 1:6.4.4~rc1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.4; UI render: default; VCL: x11;
Locale: en-GB (en_GB.UTF-8); UI-Language: en-GB
Calc: threaded

Although the version numbers seemed to have got confused. I think I
really am on 6.4.4 rc1. Reverting to the original xcd it reports the
correct version.

I was a little nervous about replacing the xcd (I have no idea what it
does), so I'll revert to the original one for now. If there are some
fairly simple changes I could make I'd be happy to try that.

I wish the local help could be included in the normal installation. It
looks as if the change to the web-based version in earlier versions has
been removed, but the local help doesn't work outside of snaps.

I have to admit I fail to understand snaps.

It was fixed. My system later updated to version 1531 as above, and
this then failed in the same way as before. I had to apply your sed

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1855736] Re: Duplicity fails to start

2019-12-20 Thread Tim Passingham
It is indeed strange, because I can't reproduce it now either. I get
the errors in #30 instead, with deja-dup saying it can't understand the
duplicity version.

I think what may have happened is that because I couldn't get deja-dup
to work I used the duplicity command line, and encrypted this particular
backup. I don't normally encrypt this backup (which is mainly system
files, config files etc). Is 'decode' something to do with encryption?

Once duplicity seemed to be sorted I redid the backup without
encryption, and now I get the issues in #30.

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/duplicity", line 55, in

ImportError: No module named duplicity.dup_main

sudo deja-dup (brings up GUI, I select backup...)
Traceback (most recent call last):

ImportError: No module named future

So:

pip install future
Requirement already satisfied: future in ./.local/lib/python2.7/site-packages

But isn't in python3 now?

Thanks very much. I'm glad I was able to help a little by testing
things.

Have you any thoughts about why deja-dup fails as I reported in #26? Do
I need to raise a separate report somewhere else?

python3 /usr/bin/duplicity --version
duplicity 0.8.09

Success!

But as before:

duplicity --version
Traceback (most recent call last):

ImportError: No module named duplicity.dup_main

Ditto for "/usr/bin/duplicity --version"

So something about not being explicity about python3 is now the issue?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1855736] Re: Duplicity fails to start

2019-12-15 Thread Tim Passingham
To be clear, I'm now on version 0.8.09-0ubuntu0ppa1526~ubuntu19.10.1
(eoan)

I rebooted after installing (just in case). I didn't purge beforehand,
so I then did so, did an apt autoremove, and reinstalled it. No change.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1855736] Re: Duplicity fails to start

2019-12-15 Thread Tim Passingham
I got that update, and things have changed a bit.

usr/lib/python3/dist-packages$ python3 duplicity/dup_main.py

returns nothing, which I think is what you wanted.

But:

/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages$ duplicity
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/duplicity", line 55, in
from duplicity.dup_main import main
ImportError: No module named duplicity.dup_main

(the same if I repeat the command from my home directory)

Or:

/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages$ duplicity/dup_main.py
bash: duplicity/dup_main.py: Permission denied

Or:

sudo duplicity/dup_main.py
[sudo] password for ...:
sudo: duplicity/dup_main.py: command not found

As you can tell, I've no idea what to try, or what's really going on.

Well that may explain something. I have no python3.X directory. I have
python3, and it contains dist-packages.

I did try:

Traceback (most recent call last):

I'm not quite sure what your last comment means, so here are 4 attempts.

PYTHONPATH='.' duplicity/dup_main.py --version
bash: duplicity/dup_main.py: No such file or directory

duplicity/dup_main.py --version
bash: duplicity/dup_main.py: No such file or directory

PYTHONPATH='.' python3 duplicity/dup_main.py --version
python3: can't open file 'duplicity/dup_main.py': [Errno 2] No such file or
directory

python3 duplicity/dup_main.py --version
python3: can't open file 'duplicity/dup_main.py': [Errno 2] No such file or

The results are the same with or without --version

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1855736] Re: Duplicity fails to start

2019-12-10 Thread Tim Passingham
After a quick web search I tried running

duplicity --version

That told me I needed to install 'future' with pip. So I installed
python-pip, future, and fasteners.

I now fail at:

duplicity --version
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/duplicity", line 55, in
from duplicity.dup_main import main
ImportError: No module named duplicity.dup_main

And then:

pip install duplicity.dup_main
Collecting duplicity.dup_main
Could not install packages due to an EnvironmentError: 404 Client Error: Not
Found for url: https://pypi.org/simple/duplicity-dup-main/

Are there some comprehensive installation instructions somewhere?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1855736] Re: Duplicity fails to start

2019-12-10 Thread Tim Passingham
I had looked for a ppa but failed to find yours.

Unfortunately deja-dup doesn't recognise this new version, saying "Could
not understand duplicity version."

I tend to use GUIs for almost everything. I guess I will have to try to
translate my deja-dup instructions into duplicity command line. This
may take me quite a while.

If there is a simple fix to deja-dup (or duplicity) to get round this
I'd be grateful.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1738821] Re: Appstream data points to libreoffice-common

2018-04-04 Thread Tim Passingham
Please forgive me, but I am not quite clear whether this bug report
suggests that the startcenter desktop should no longer exist or not, or
whether it should just be in a different package.

I am a libreoffice user, and like to keep up to date with changes and
fixes, and am on:

Version: 6.0.3.1
Build ID: 1:6.0.3~rc1-0ubuntu0.17.10.1
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 4.13; UI render: GL; VCL: gtk2;
Locale: en-GB (en_GB.UTF-8); Calc: grou

Having just updated to this from 6.0.2 I no longer have a startcenter desktop.
This is a nuisance, to say the least. I have constructed one for myself, but
users surely should not have to do so.

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Searching for Libreoffice in a software centre which uses Appstream
data (most of them) brings up Libreoffice but install libreoffice-
common. This is because it contains libreoffice-startcenter.desktop
which gets extracted into the DEP-11 data. libreoffice-common doesn't
depend on anything useful so the user does not end up with a useful
libreoffice install. It would be better to move this libreoffice-
startcenter.desktop file into the libreoffice meta package.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1728449] Re: Indicator icons do not appear after upgrade to Ubuntu 17.10

2017-11-18 Thread Tim Passingham
Marco - If you are referring to my comments, I freely admit my linux
knowledge is very limited.

As a client upgrading from 17.04 I do not, and seemingly have no way of
knowing, what a valid configuration is in this respect. I'm not using
Unity any more, and am using Ubuntu (Xorg) rather than the explicit
GNOME login.

I also found a new version of the QuoteAndComposeManager extension (0.4.1) that
works in version 45.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1604394] Re: send button does not work

2016-07-22 Thread Tim Passingham
Hi again,

I thought I should at least try testing without any extensions enabled.
That fixed it on xenial :-)

The offending extension was QuoteAndComposeManager 0.3.32.3 (1/16/13).
Disabling this resolved the issue. My other extensions (especially
Lightning, which is important to me) are OK.

For me this issue can now be closed (extensions presumably not being
part of 'the package'). However Daniele De Felice may still have
issues.

least on some systems. Not everyone will find it that easy to downgrade

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1539634] Re: network-manager crashes when using libnl-3-200 3.2.21-1ubuntu1

2016-05-27 Thread Tim Passingham
I look after a relative's 14.04 xubuntu system. They live some way away
so it wasn't possible for me to help them directly. They lost all
internet connections, so a) couldn't look for solutions, and b) couldn't
do any upgrades. They are capable of following detailed instructions,
but don't really understand what they are doing. So when I spell out
'sudo' and they still type 'pseudo' I don't know why it hasn't worked.
I'm no expert either, but I can usually sort things out after a time.

Suffice to say this was really hard to resolve. Once I found the
askubuntu thread I realised that was probably the cause of their
problem, and found this report, but that was only after many other
checks and tests.

I should stress that they don't have 'proposed' updates enabled (nor
even LTS updates), so their system was indeed crippled by an official
release, and in a way that made determining a cause and fixing it rather
hard. Not great.

I got them to try the solution manually enabling eth0, but this didn't
seem to work. Eventually I managed to rather painfully describe the
method of downgrading the 3 library files (which were very fortunately
still in the archives) and that worked. Getting new .debs to them would
have been fraught with difficulty. They have since done a full update
and all is now well.

I've gone to a little length to explain this here because I think the
ubuntu family of systems is great, and I encourage non-technical people
to use it. Bad updates to network software are, however, very serious
indeed, since the means of diagnosing and resolving such issues are
inherently unavailable. This doesn't do much for ubuntu's reputation,
or its wider use amongst less technical people.

Can I hope that 'lessons have been learned'?

  network-manager crashes when using libnl-3-200 3.2.21-1ubuntu1

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in network-manager source package in Trusty:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Triage Notes]

This regression is caused by a libnl proposed update tracked in bug
1511735. It has not been released as an update, only proposed as an
update for early testing. If you volunteered to test proposed updates,
then thank you. Your care and attention will stop this regression from
hitting ordinary users, and we appreciate your contribution to Ubuntu.

If you are not aware that you volunteered to test proposed updates,
then please be aware that your system is configured to do so. In this
case, you probably should turn this off. I'd appreciate if someone
could explain how to do this in the comments.

  [Impact]

   * NetworkManager depends on libnl (libnl-3-200 libnl-genl-3-200
libnl-route-3-200) and when libnl is updated to proposed
3.2.21-1ubuntu1 NM segfaults due to libnl exposing a bug in NM
     validation packets.

This affects the 0.98 release of NetworkManager and has already

   * Backporting fixes from upstream release is required to prevent
NetworkManager from faulting which breaks networking on most

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1373928]

2014-10-23 Thread Tim Passingham
(In reply to Dan Lewis from comment #27)
Yesterday, I downloaded LibreOffice from the PPA to test this problem on
a 32 bit laptop using Ubuntu 14.04. (Mine was associated with the
possibility of the mysql native connector might be the cause of this problem
when using MySQL with LibreOffice. (Stefan Gruber and I have been on the
LibreOffice user mailing list about it.)
Today he gave me a link to this bug. So this evening, I have down the
example database and opened it using LibreOffice from the PPA. I saw the
 following results:

 0 foo 42
 1 bar 4711

 LibreOffice information:
 Version: 4.3.2.2
 Build ID: 430m0(Build: 2)

Have they fixed the problem with a newer version of the download file?
That display looks correct to me.

I see the severity has been reduced.

Now I don't understand these things, so forgive me for asking. However, why
is this less severe now, since the current ubuntu ppa release for BASE users
  is still unusable?

This bug tracker tracks the severity of bug for the upstream LibreOffice
project. Ubuntu-only packaging bugs are tracked on Launchpad. Note that even
there a ppa-only issue isnt as critical as one in the main distro
repository. Running the latest and greatest always has its tradeoff.

Also: Please direct further general bugtracking questions to the QA-list at

OK, thanks. I'll await information on launchpad #1373928.

[Impact] This bug has been quite active for some time. Its just a fact

[Development Fix] The current remmina version (1.0.0-1ubuntu7) in

[Stable Fix] The patch for fixing this has been attached to this
  thread.

  [Test Case]
  - Install Remmina
  - Connect to a random RDP server
  - Copy something on the client
  - Paste it now on the server
= Normally the content should be synced, but this is not the cause.

[Regression Potential] before Precise we had rdesktop as RDP client.
This client had support for clipboard redirection.
But as Remmina is now the default RDP client, alot of people are missing this

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1274613] Re: module-bluetooth-discover does not load on login

2014-05-08 Thread Tim Passingham
This is driving me potty.

It seems I first have to attempt to connect the sink using Blueman,
which fails with Connection Failed: Stream setup failed

I then use pactl to load the module-bluetooth-discover, and attempt
reconnection, which usually works.

If I do these two thing the other way round it does not work.

This is horrible. All I want to do is listen to something. It should
'just work' once all the right software is installed and the device is
paired.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1181106] Re: Failed to change profile to A2DP in 13.04 (Raring), 13.10 (saucy), and 14.04 (trusty)

2014-05-08 Thread Tim Passingham
Same problem for me in 14.04.

I have to attempt to connect via blueman to the device first which
fails. Then

pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover

then connect with blueman again. I now get sound, Pulseaudio claims it
is a2dp, blueman says not. The sound is poor, so I think blueman is
right.

  Steps I'm using:

  * using blueman, I can connect to the external bluetooth speaker and view the
device in the devices listing
  * I can connect the device to the Audio sink and I get a message saying it is
now connected and will show in the PulseAudio mixer
  * After connecting the external speaker to the audio sink, I can also see the
device in the Play sound through listing in the Sound system control panel,
but the icon has a circle with a line through it.
  * but if I right-click the device and choose Audio Profile from the context
menu and try to select High Fidelity Playback (A2DP) as the new profile, I
get an error message stating failed to change profile to a2dp

  I've already added Enable=Socket in /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf,
without that I can't pair my headset. Now I can pair it, but I can't
  activate the A2DP profile.

When I try to activate it, I see this message in my syslog :
pulseaudio[2603]: [pulseaudio] module-bluetooth-device.c: Profile has no

I tried the kernel 3.9.0 because of a sound problem with my soundcard,
this kernel fixed my soundcard problem, but A2DP still doesn't work

jph - that sound familiar. I had similar problems moving from

mysql connector supplied as an extension by libreoffice didn't work.
The ubuntu connector, however, did work until this more recent network
