Unfortunately I don't have synaptic installed and I can't install it now. I
have tried dpkg --configure -a and apt-get install -f
I am always stuck with this error-

BTW, how did you manage to install mate-desktop. I cannot install any package

I have same issue while upgrading to 14.04 from 13.10. I have tried
almost everything but unable to get back my GUI. Can anyone tell me
temporary solution until this bug is fixed.
