My Epson Perfection V500 stopped working after I upgraded from 17.04 to
17.10, as per everyone else's.
I created the softlink
$sudo ln -sfr /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa* /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/sane
and created the file
$sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/79-udev-epson.rules
with content
ATTRS{manufacturer}=="EPSON", DRIVERS=="usb", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb",
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="*", MODE="0777"
Still no joy.

The 3rd-party plug-in the vendor provides as .deb package will still
install. But the scanner is no more recognized.

I have this bug on a thinkpad x301 since upgrading it to Pangolin. It's intermittent though -- occasionally choosing Shutdown from the system menu (top right) has worked but usually it just hangs on the ubuntu splash screen with the little row of white buttons flashing red. LEDs show that wireless is off, but not power. And the laptop gets quite hot unless I force it to shut down with the vulcan nerve pinch.
