I have the same trouble in Ubuntu 12.04,
Notebook: Acer aspire 5553G
Soundcard: Realtek ALC271X (Windows say that it is ALC269).
First I want to say that this is NOT Linux bug, this is Windows 7 bug, or
Realtek audio driver for Windows 7 bug.

Ubuntu = 12.04 amd64
kernel = 3.5.0-22-generic.
rootfs = btrfs
Sometimes I was able to see

Forget to say.
I have plymouth installed, but just removed of quiet and splash from
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT.
