I just found a kind of hardware solution to this problem. There's a touchpad configuration flag named "absolute position filtering" which roughens the position reporting. Accessing that configuration is a bit tricky, but there's a code in fwupd project which demonstrates how it's done. I

I suspect this behaviour is caused by the interaction of a couple of factors: * the touchpad is anisotropic, about 2500DPI vertically but only 1500DPI horizontally * both the synaptics driver and X are making making pointer acceleration calculations These can be mostly fixed by tweaking the
