Look at all the technological improvements in the past 100 years, and try to imagine what life will be like 100 years from now. Now do that 10 times over. That's 1000 years into the future, less than one-millionth of the time until the Sun goes red giant. It's almost inconceivable that humans will not be able to significantly alter the Earth or Sun's future even in the next few thousand years (assuming we don't kill each other first). Look at human history. The most insignificant decision taken by an individual has worldwide ramifications a few hundred years later. In the same way, your own current decisions might have a huge impact down the road. Who knows, maybe whether you have coffee or tea at breakfast today will decide whether humanity colonizes the stars or destroys the Earth 2000 years from now.
