I solved the problem by doing:

sudo apt-get install pulseaudio-esound-compat

so replacing pulseaudio-esound-compat:i386 with it's x64 counterpart ;)

I have the same problem, and it happen to me after i install ia32-libs
and all it's releated package. It happened yesterday, i formatted with
today ubuntu 13.04 live cd image, all seems to work, after many boot of
the system all was working until i decided to do:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

after that immediatly rebooted ad nomore audio control, only alsamixer
from terminal emulator!

  sound applet doesn't work

Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Under System - Preferences - Sound it is possible to choose a Device. 
Although there is no device listed,  my audio device works and I can set the 
volume only through a terminal using alsamixer. As a result, I can't set the 
volume through the sound-applet.

The same happened to me, I guess there is some issue with 32-bit
libraries, but I'm not sure at all.
