Oh, that's a little embarrassing. alsactl init solved this - as did
deleting /var/lib/alsa/asound.state to get rid of whatever
customizations we had before. Still, I don't recall doing this myself
(especially not running alsactl store after doing it), so I wonder if
it's an upgrade issue?
