This happened to me after a fresh install of Ubuntu 15.04. It's the
Unity option in Compiz settings that is disabled, but Compiz settings
isn't installed by default (or wasn't for me anyway).
Easiest way to get things back to normal is to open a terminal and do:
sudo apt-get install
Dear All,
I'm new to ubuntu.
I've been trying to install nvidia drivers and cuda to use gpu for machine
learning.
I tried different versions, once lost the desktop (had a blank screen) and

It happened to me also when I upgraded from 12.04 -- 14.04 -- 14.10.
It occurred after the second update (to 14.10). The solution from

Thanks!
A couple of the things above were required to get mine working. This is
what did it (run from the terminal along side of the broken desktop):
CtrlAltF1
# Login
export DISPLAY=:0
cd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/
sudo mv libglx.so libglx.so.xorg
sudo cp libglx.so.340.32 libglx.so

I hit this bug when upgrading to Nvidia driver version 340.32. I noticed

This worked for me too. The problem occured when I switched from nouveau

Trying to fix the issue, I switched back to nouveau, but that didn't
help. resetting the

This continue to be a problem: if the OpenGL plugin detects a problem
once it disables itself and the Compiz configuration must be manually
reset before it will even activate again. That leaves a less than
satisfactory user experience.

Hit on desktop running 14.04 and nvida gtx 780. Was running nvidia-

Fixed by uninstalling nvidia drivers:
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
Then running the gsettings command from post 11.
Once I was back in, I installed the nvidia drivers via the 'additional
drivers' interface.
