Hi Dominic, Thanks for your help to make Ubuntu better by reporting this issue! The description of the problem is quite similar to the description at bug 1162836, where the culprit proved to be the likewise software for communicating with other platforms. Are you possibly using likewise?

Hi Gunnar, I am not using likewise. There was indeed something weird with our (supposedly paranoid) pam.d configuration. common-account: account sufficientpam_krb5.so account sufficientpam_unix.so account required pam_deny.so common-auth: authsufficient pam_unix.so
