I have the same problem after an upgrade to 13.10. It was quite a
challenge to log in in such a short time frame so I guess this can be a
real serious issue for slow typing people. I would be more than happy to
provide more details to get this issue resolved.
Since auto-login may not be an acceptable workaround for everyone I
suggest to use the lightdm-gtk-greeter instead:
* Use CTRL+F1 to do a console login
* sudo apt-get install lightdm-gtk-greeter
* sudo cp /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.bak
* sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
* Change the greeter-session line to: greeter-session=lightdm-gtk-greeter
* Exit (CTRL+X) and safe changes
* sudo service lightdm restart
* logout (exit or CTRL+D)
* Use CTRL+F7 for a graphical login.

Title:
cannot login after upgrade to 13.10
Status in “unity-greeter” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
since the release upgrade, i have difficulty logging in: the
lightdm-unity-greeter
seems to have a short timeout after which the user/password fields disappear
and are replaced by Remote login with no possibility to login or return to
the
previous screen.
for the moment i am avoiding the problem by using an auto-login configuration.
