It seems like this was a driver issue.

Title:
Firefox and Thunderbird freezes entire system after a few seconds
It seems that using the proprietary drivers from Nvidia resolves the
issue. I switched to the proprietary drivers since december 7th and
haven't had a crash since. Even using Firefox full time which previously
crashed my system within the hour.
This hints to me that it actually is a Unity issue,
Since Oct. 30th I've had a crash about every day.
Today (Nov. 12th) I've loaded the 3.19.0-33 kernel and it seems like my
system is stable now! I've tried some things that previously caused a
crash immediately and this time I've had no crash whatsoever.
Does anyone know how to report this issue
Alas, I cheered too early, I did also experience this bug using the 3.19
kernel. :(

Firefox and Thunderbird freezes
Okay, so it happened again today. The only open windows were Chromium,
Eclipse and Sky (Some proprietary implementation of Skype for Business)
Eclipse was started with STW_GTK3=0, so either that does solve the
problem, or (Chromium|Sky) causes the issue too.
I do think this is not a FireFox-only
I'm having a similar issue on 15.10.
- I've done a Memtest to check for faulty memory: no faulty memory found
- I've tried both proprietry and open-source nVidia drivers: Didn't seem to
have an effect
- ctrl-alt-F[1-6] don't work
- No kernel panic
- No crash log in /var/crash
- Tried Firefox
New data!
I'm experiencing the same issue with Eclipse! That is: Eclipse when I do
SWT_GTK3=0 ~/.opt/eclipse-jee-mars/eclipse
When enabling SWT_GTK3, then I don't experience freezes. I do experience
repaint-issues (where parts of the interface are not redrawn correctly),
thats why I tried
Having had the issue with 14.04, 15.04 and 15.10 (also on fresh installed
system).
Only propretary driver installed is bcmwl-kernel-source, no other system
modifications were done (graphics are Intel HD).
Problem also happens with disabled Firefox addons and doesn't not happen
at all without
Same issues as comment #22. Firefox is usually the only program
running, happens randomly after about 30mins, tty gives a blank screen.
Will try ssh in and waiting longer for a response
Am using 15.04 fully updated on a hp455g2 and the fglrx driver

Having the same issue. Firefox randomly locks up the system requiring a
hard reset(holding power button, system doesn't respond to anything
else.) The mouse moves but I'm unable to do anything else including
switching to a tty.

Hi Dave,
I uploaded some screen captures that paint a better picture of what's
going on. Please see the attachments to my above comments.
You suggested that I attempt to ssh into the frozen VM and, if possible,
look at relevant logs. I was able to access my VM when its desktop was
frozen, but
Hi Gizmo,
OK, it sounds like what you've got there is different from the original bug -
the fact it recovers means it's not completely dead.
Check your configuration of your virtual machine in virt-manager (or whatever
you use); change the 'video' type - it's probably on QXL at the moment,
I'm currently having a similar problem (system freeze) when running
Firefox in an Ubuntu 15.04 virtual machine (VM) under KVM/Qemu. That
is, the VM (but not the host) freezes within a few seconds after
visiting certain sites (including Ubuntu.com) using Firefox in the VM.
I'll just add that:
Just to expand on (and repeat some of) the above:
(1) I haven't run into this problem (system freeze when running visiting
certain sites, including Ubuntu.com, using Firefox) when running bare-metal on
my Intel-based laptop or when running bare-metal on my AMD-based desktop;
(2) The above is
unfrozen2.png - This is a screen capture of the 15.04 VM taken a little
after the screen capture depicted in unfrozen1.png. At this point, I
had closed Firefox. Note that my background image changed to black and
the the text is still garbled.

unfrozen1.png - This is a screen capture of the 15.04 VM taken several
minutes after the initial freeze. After several minutes, the desktop
unfroze. Note that the site (ubuntu.com) had loaded by the time the
desktop had unfrozen. However, although unfrozen, text is garbled.
** Attachment added:
top.png - This is a screen capture of an ssh session taken while the
15.04 desktop was frozen by Firefox. Top is running. Note that a root
process at over 100% cpu usage.

desktop froze. Note that the site (ubuntu.com) had not fully loaded at
the time of the freeze.

Hi Dave:
Sure, I'll do my best to provide more info. To be be candid, I'm a
little busy right now, so it may be a few days.
In the meantime, I'll just note that some sites seem to cause Firefox to
freeze the system more quickly than do other sites. For example,
opening only the default start
Gizmo: OK, that's interesting; life is normally easier testing in a VM anyway -
although we do have to
be careful about grouping them to the same bug report until we're really sure.
Anyway:
Can you please do the following when it fails:
1) Confirm whether the guest still pings
2) If it

I agree with Dave, but any reason why it would be triggered only by
either Firefox or Thunderbird?
At the time both the nouveau drivers and proprietary drivers had this
problem.
Currently , I have now wiped the machine and installed fresh 15.04, and
the problem has disappeared.

Even though Alberto has marked this as Triaged, this is still wrong - as I said
previously, it can't be a Mozilla bug if it's locking the machine solid.
My bet would be graphics driver (since firefox does tend to push that hard).
Please answer for the ping test in my comment #7 and try the other

Something they're both using; what is hard to say without getting some
more info.

Hang on, this can't be firefox's fault - no application should be able
to freeze the system to the point of needing a hard reset.
Please confirm:
1) Does the mouse pointer still move or capslock light change if you press
the button?
2) Does ctrl-alt-f2/f3/etc switch to text console
Does the machine still ping (from another machine)?
Are you using the Nvidia binary drivers or the nouveau drivers - what
happens if you flip to the other one?

This may not totally be a firefox issue. It might also be related to a
version conflict. This was on an upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04.
The strange thing was that only the mozilla applications
caused/triggered the problem.
It did indeed cause a full freeze. No mouse, and no hotkeys would
respond.
