I've now verified libxau version 1:1.0.8-1ubuntu1 works on bionic (amd64). The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libxau/1:1.0.8-1ubuntu1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.
