Hm... It should offer you an update automatically if you are not running the latest version. I must admit I'm not quite sure what's going on here. If you open a terminal (ctrl+alt+t), could you run the following command: apt policy firefox and paste the output here? It should tell us which

Could you check "Software updates" (see attached image), it will likely have some available updates? Applications in Ubuntu are available through Ubuntu Software (https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/ubuntu-help/addremove-install.html), which is the "app store". Most things can be found there and
