OK. I had a thought.
Started in Safe Mode - all is OK.
So I then went around disabling all extensions and *as I disabled one* the
window maximized width-wise.
That extension is: CustomizeMyBird.
So I'll report the issue there instead.

FYI: As I shut-down Thunderbird teh .xsessions-erros file gets these
entries.
