Title:
Gnome Shell froze GUI entirely with 100% CPU usage

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Without warning or apparent user action, my entire system froze aside
from the mouse cursor. I was able to switch to a VT to log in and
capture this bug report. After that, I had to `kill -9 gnome-shell`
after which it restarted properly and my session is now working fine
  again.

Possibly a dupe of #1709597 but that is quite old.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1821648] Re: Gnome Shell froze GUI entirely with 100% CPU usage

2019-03-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please:

1. Remove all your extensions since extensions tend to cause most of the
bugs like this one...

b'org.gnome.shell' b'enabled-extensions' b"['ubuntu-
appindicat...@ubuntu.com', 'extensi...@abteil.org',
'hams...@projecthamster.wordpress.com', 'cont...@projecthamster.org',
'dash-to-d...@micxgx.gmail.com', 'user-theme@gnome-shell-
extensions.gcampax.github.com', 'gsconn...@andyholmes.github.io',
'system-moni...@paradoxxx.zero.gmail.com', 'openweather-
extens...@jenslody.de', 'vit...@corecoding.com', 'status-area-
horizontal-spac...@mathematical.coffee.gmail.com', 'autohide-
batt...@sitnik.ru', 'mediapla...@patapon.info', 'dim-on-
batt...@nailfarmer.nailfarmer.com', 'activities-config@nls1729',
'caffe...@patapon.info', 'removeaccesibility@lomegor', 'gnome-fuzzy-
sea...@gnome-shell-exstensions.fffilo.github.com', 'transparent-window-
mov...@noobsai.github.com', 'window-title-in-topbar@fthx']"

2. If the problem reoccurs without extensions then next time use:

  killall -ABRT gnome-shell # or -USR1 ?

to generate a crash report and then follow these instructions:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Missing_a_crash_report_or_having_a_.crash_attachment
