Many ibus-libpinyin users in the Chinese Ubuntu forum have reported very satisfactory results--they have expressed very pleasant surprised that this tool has improved SO MUCH！ However, there is one more very important update that is still not in the current version. I consulted with Sebastien on IRC, and we concluded that we will not backport libpinyin 2.3.0 to bionic and disco for now for the reasons stated above. Ubuntu 19.10, with version 2.3.0, will be released tomorrow, so users who want to do the transition will have the option to upgrade their Ubuntu version. Right, it will clean the user input history when upgrade from 2.2.0 to 2.3.0. The latest libpinyin release, 2.3.0, will be used in Ubuntu 19.10. But when you say "will only clean up the user data", does it mean that an upgrade from 2.2.2 to 2.3.0 will automatically delete the users' whole input history from the cache? Or do you mean something else? I'm asking with the already released Ubuntu 18.04 and 19.04 in mind. It's possible to do stable release updates of those, if the most recent libpinyin version can be considered a pure bug fix release. However, if the upgrade would automatically delete the users' input history, that would be an interruption of the user experience which would not be suitable for a stable release update. Deleting the cache also wipes out the personal dictionary, which is a critical component in libpinyin and pinyin operations. The version of libpinyin in 19.10 has been moved to 2.3; whereas it stays in 2.2 in 19.04. My experience is, ibus-libpinyin still has stability problems in 19.04. The dictionary built in conjunction with libpinyin 2.2 cannot be ported to version 2.3. I don't know whether this problem has been solved since I have not been using 19.04 for a while (& have deleted from my machine). Great! That crash file is way over my head. But if that command fixed it, the issue was upstream in nature, so possibly you should point at that file in the upstream issue. If you have used ibus-libpinyin previously in Ubuntu 18.04, there is a chance that it's somehow related to bug #1768166, i.e. you may have had corrupted files from a previous ibus-libpinyin version in the cache. Correct my findings. Now I find it doesn't matter how Intelligent Pinyin is activated - no matter by mouse point and click or by super+space. The behaviors are actually the same. What happened is that switching to Intelligent Pinyin does not take any effect. If before switching to Intelligent Pinyin I was using English input, then I continue get English input. If before switching I was using cangjie, I still get cangjie. New findings. I was just wondering "what if I install Pinyin back again?", but then had another thought. I installed another Chinese input method that is dramatically different than Intelligent Pinyin, which is "Chinese (cangjie (m17n))". I then switched between the three methods - English, "Intelligent Pinyin", and cangjie. Guess what I found? cangjie works - at least I can tell it's inputting Chinese since I don't know how to use cangjie Intelligent Pinyin - if I switch to Intelligent Pinyin using drop-down menu and select with mouse, it does not work. I see that the ibus-engine-pinyin process is still running. That possibly matters. Ok. I started with using only "Chinese (Pinyin)", which works just fine.
I then opened "Language and Region" setting, removed "Chinese (Pinyin)"
and added "Chinese (Intelligent Pinyin)". Now the system bar shows
"Chinese (Intelligent Pinyin)" is selected. I tried to input Chinese
into the following inputs in various applications and they all not work.
I tried using "shift".
- text area in Chrome browser (this comment)
- URL in Chrome browser
- gedit
- shell (ctrl+alt+t)
- LibreOffice Write
Just some guess, I previously installed & used fcitx & Google Pinyin. Is
that a problem? I understand if this problem seems only relate to my
particular settings and you guys have priorities, that's fine. However
if you wish to get to the bottom of this problem, let me know what else
I can do.

I never experienced the same kind of problem with ibus-libpinyin in Ubuntu 19.04. But since 19.04 is going to be EOL'd in a couple of months, I have no interest whatsoever in wasting my very limited time beating a soon-to-be-dead-horse visiting this (to me) non-issue. (Suppose we find the problem, so what?!) Please focus our attention on Ubuntu 19.10, which will be serving as the base for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. The daily built is very stable (the beta version has small glitches, try the daily built). I use ibus-libpinyin routinely, no problem. Please keep in mind that Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is only 6 months away. If we screw up again, we be damned!
