The implementation of OpenDirectory was fixed in xdg-desktop-portal 1.10.0 to correctly highlight the selected file. This isn't specific to Unity, but rather to the version of xdg-desktop- portal available in your distribution. Note that the issue is that the file is not highlighted. I tried the kde neon live cd yesterday, and it worked as expected there.
