Title:
heavy display corruptions with KMS and x1400

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xorg

With a Mobility Radeon x1400 and KMS enabled I encounter severe
display corruptions. It seems that an application utilizing OpenGL
makes this behaviour even worse. The corruptions start about 5 minutes
after boot and create thin flickering about 1cm long horizontal lines
followed by screen flickering (like an old analogous television with a
bad signal; the picture drifts up and down). The latter screen
flickering renders X and the console unusable. The corruptions do not
  show up in a screenshot.

The problem persists with Mainline Kernel 2.6.34 and/or Xorg-Edgers
  PPA and/or amd64 Ubuntu version.

  Possible Fixes:
  1. Disabling KMS with "radeon.modeset=0" fixes the display corruptions but...
well disables KMS ;-)
  2. I recently found out that running "avivotool regset 0x458 0x00000000" also
fixes this issue with KMS ENABLED. But that shouldn't be run by any user having
a x1400, right?

If you need any further information or additional files, please let me
  know.
