Same here Ubuntu 11.10 with gnome-shell.
This morning I have tried last daily Ubuntu 12.04 and the proble is still there.

In case anybody needs to bring DVD+RWs back to life after brasero is
done with them, i figured out after much experimentation that the
sequence of the following two commands will work:
sudo dvd+rw-format -force /dev/cdrw
sudo dvd+rw-format -lead-out /dev/cdrw

I've written to you in order to let you know of other tests I've done
following some hints from Luis Medinas
If you are using a cd-rw or dvd-rw and brasero can't read your disk
after an unsuccessful burn, you can use k3b (sudo apt-get install k3b)
to blank the disk and write to it again.

As I've written on the Brasero bug
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=655601) it clearly started
with Ubuntu 11.04 and it's still here on 11.10, and even with Fedora 16.
I hope someone will have a look, because it happens to everyone using
default settings!
