I can confirm that this bug happens in Ubuntu 11.10 if a Western Digital My Book (1 Tb mirroring) is connected through USB. Disconnecting the WD results in a gnome-settings-daemon that doesn't crash. This bug can be temporarily fixed by executing the following script as startup item in "Startup A
