Could you please check the settings for the size of the main Banshee
windows ?
You can do that with gconf-editor or by running the following commands :
gconftool-2 -g /apps/banshee-1/player_window/height
gconftool-2 -g /apps/banshee-1/player_window/width

Status
I was able to fix the problem by uninstalling, removing it's gconf
settings with gconftool-2 --unset-recursive /apps/banshee-1. this has
rectified the problem although I lost all my settings.

Reinstalling wouldn't have helped. It was most probably purging the gconf
settings. What do the two gconftool commands output now?
