I have done some further tests and found that one can still make a bluetooth dial-up connection using Gnome-ppp (Covered in www.pcurtis.com/wind.htm#bt for those who want to use it as a workround). Gnome-ppp requires one to be in the dialout and dip groups and having added myself to dialout and

How I got my blackberry 8520 with tmobile working was: Install fresh 11.10 from cd. Pair phone Add DUN with wizard that launched It worked perfectly. Then I added ppa repos for KDE 4.8, and updated. After update it still worked and there was a nice icon showing how many bars of signal I have.
