A second attempt almost always succeeds, and logins are normal until the next reboot. This laptop has been in service for a couple of years, running 10.04 LTS with updates (currently 10.04.04) throughout, and this problem only started a few months ago. I have captured some files with a console login. I put some logs in pastebin.com (they don't tell me much, I hope they help you) Xorg.0.log is at http://pastebin.com/38syicdp Xorg.0.log.old is at http://pastebin.com/NgxzkSia .xsession-errors is full of applications saying the X server died.
