Also, the feature to add a custom command was pretty amazing.
Ubuntu's power is in it's customizability. It's a good idea to make it
universally usable, but not at the cost of functionality.

Hello. I had a problem to add a custom command linking to calibre to
open the .epub format of the ebooks. I found many sophisticated
workarounds in the web but the simplest way to solve is to install
thunar.

why was this feature removed?
was it done to force the poor application choices onto us?

My guess is that Gnome (the upstream desktop) removed it as part of
their project of dumbing-down the user interface.
