This bug is about a complete system lock-up. No other TTYs can be started.
Mouse doesn't move. Keyboard doesn't react. The only solution is hard reset.
Seems to happen on a variety of configurations, including nVidia, ATI
and Intel graphics.
This bug also affects me, over three years after the bug was posted.
My comuter is an Acer Aspire E1-410-2832
Intel Celeron quad core processor N2920
Intel graphics
4 GB RAM
Happens randomly in ALL internet browsers.

Use vm.swappiness vm.vfs_cache_pressure to the minimum possible
Run the below command in Terminal
sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf
Add the below line at the end of the file. Select File Save. Select File
Quit. Restart computer
vm.swappiness=1
maybe memory is overclocked? Try to test your memory with memtester
from a desktop session. This helps me to find the issue in memory.

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I am facing the full freeze issues too.
So much that its froze for 12 times in 2 hours. Hard Reboot is the only
way to revive the system. The configuration is,

I was running different Nvidia graphic cards with different proprietary
Nvidia drivers (see my previous post).
Changed the Nvidia graphic card to an old HD 5670 Radeon AMD and loaded
the catalyst drivers. *Until now no more system hangups has appeared.*

12.04LTS as I remember. Previously the system was stable as a rock
running 10.04 LTS.

I think this bug is not solved on 12.04 LTS. If it's a kernel bug, the
patch should be backported to the latest official 12.04 kernel and
delivered via normal software update.

Whatever the actual reason is: For me the problem vanished since I
disconnected the additional monitor (I had 1-2 freezes per day, not one
in a week with just 1 monitor).
If there is any hint how I can improve my bug report data on this odd
issue I'd be glad, since the log files do not to help,
I just had major data loss due to the computer freezing up because of
this bug. A whole git repository was hopelessly damaged. It contains
major work data. I don't know what I can restore since the last backup.
Maybe some of it.

I have disabled gui to check the performance, issue remains same.

AMD system that's NOT freezing. I'm not using any other monitor on the laptop,

I notice that this is filed under package “xserver-xorg-video-intel” yet
people report issues on various graphics cards. Mine is AMD chipset with
VGA controller Radeon AMD nee ATI RS880 [Radeon HD 4200].
Will this reduce visibility to those concerned with the radeon driver?

I have ran for 24 hours on 12.04.1 with LTS Enablement stack from
Quantal installed (with kernel 3.5.0-23-generic and X.Org X Server
1.13.0 / 2:1.13.0-0ubuntu6.1~precise2).

to the login screen there was:
(1) No grub menu, (2) No boot screen just purple, (3) When plugging in a USB

I did the upgrade, and so far looks good. Installation went smooth.
Had to choose Previous version from Grub menu because it default to
3.6.3. and manually choose 3.5.0-23. All went well after
I just found this issue, and with latest 12.10 I have this issue, only
when using Thunderbird. I have been working on my laptop for 4 hours.
In the first two hours I have Thunderbird open and it crashed every 20
minutes (I can't recall if firefox was also open). I shutdown and
didn't open

fglrx radeon driver is more stable more often but has it's own issues and
crashes. Overall is no better. Back to open source driver.
