I just had the same problem, but I found out that it was because I disactivated the wireless by the option in the indicator menu without remembering to turn it on again. Still the text read wireless is disabled by hardware switch, which was not true. I think the text could be more detailed and

There are plenty of askubuntu similar issues. (e.g. http://askubuntu.com/questions/139036/ubuntu-12-04-says-wireless-is- disabled-by-hardware-switch) and launchpad answers too. The wireless shuts down and won't turn on again after the switch in turned on. Proposed solution is to run rfkill
