I did a test. I built the same program with gcc5 and gcc6, then I
compared the output of "readelf -a". It happens that Nautilus is right.
gcc on Ubuntu 16.10 creates a shared library by default instead of an
executable (the Type field in the ELF header is different).

Ubuntu, but the code itself is from gnome-settings-daemon 3.6.4 and will never
be updated. It should really be released in it's own PPA, but I could never
grasp debian packaging--it is more difficult to package

Bug still exists with Thunderbird v45.3.0 on 16.04 .. but recently i
discovered some solution : when clicking the envelop icon in the Ubuntu
notification bar (upper right, next to the clock) and then clicking the
inbox(es) in its menu, the little number at the Thunderbird launch icon
disappears !
I've the impression this is due to nautilus not being properly resized
when display size changes (in a VM) or a new one is added...
nautilus -q
and starting the filemanager again should fix this.

Clicking the right mouse button on the breadcrumb-buttons that represent
