I had a similar problem. turns out it was actual high load that forced
the cpu clock speed to always be more than 3GHz on all (!) cores. namely
the xorg (>100%), systemd-journald (>50%) and rsyslogd(>30%) were
consuming a lot cpu power. in the journal i could see the following line

I have a brand new Acer Predator 17x and I just installed Ubuntu 18.04.
I also only get sound out of the left speaker. When I do the sound test,
both the Right and Left channel sounds come out of the left speaker.

I run my screen on 100% scaling even though the ubuntu default for my

That doesn't confirm you are booted into the HWE kernel. That only shows
that certain packages are installed (which you provided already in a
previous comment).
Thanks. It looks like there is maybe a logical reconnect of the display
to the X server at the start around 14:32:29, and that could be
triggering a lot of things.
Then problems occur in:
/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com
Can you tell us which app indicator icons
If your password starts by holding the Shift key then this would be a
duplicate of bug 1765261.
Alternatively, if you get stuck on a blank purple screen then it is bug
1766137.
