In my case, in addition to John's GTK warning, the following error is
logged in dmesg with every Totem launch:
radeon_dp_aux_transfer_native: 32 callbacks suppressed
And as per Janne's case, also a fresh install, but playback stutters and
skips, whereas VLC is fine.

Aspect ratio is still not correct for images that are more narrow than
the container. To reproduce, create an image that has aspect ratio,
e.g., ~0.5 (e.g. width = 250 and height = 500).

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
and reboot.
Now make sure you're using the new version 3.36.2 by running:
dpkg -s libmutter-6-0 | grep Version

and no keyboard functions work and the system locks up
