OK I tried an earlier version of the nvidia drivers - 304.123. p roblem remains. I have tried removing the graphics card and reverting to the on board chip. Problem remains. On borad chip is: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics

Seeing as the log file refers to a failure to open '/home/simon/.local/share/recently-used.xbel' I looked that file up. Using 'sudo nautilus' to open a file manager I found it and opened it: it reads as below the line of asterisks. I looked at its permissions and it states: Owner - Root - Read
