I've also found that whenever i change the hdmi resolution back to one of the resolutions that the tv originally reported, the audio over hdmi begins to work again. if i again change to the the tv native resolution (set with xrandr), the audio over hdmi stops again. while the audio is not

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1533343 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1533343 I'm experiencing what appears to be the same issue. I have an Acer aspire. Fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04 lts (though same symptoms on 16.10 & 17.04). I also experience this from the liveUSB installer.
