Can someone who can reproduce this try a scan with the default settings,
then the settings set to the maximum, and the set to minimum?

After this attach ~/.cache/simple-scan/simple-scan.log (or run simple
--debug from the command line). This will show the values that simple-
scan chose to send.

Since I cannot reproduce this with xsane's brightness/contrast controls,
I would guess the problem is in simple-scan..

I can confirm this bug on 16.04 with Lide 60.
Is it a bug in SANE or simple-scan?
Can anyone with another scanner (driver) quickly add if they are *not*
experiencing this?

I'm using a Canon Lide 60 scanner in combination with Simple Scan 3.20.0 on
Xubuntu 16.04 .
Appearently someone mixed up the direction of the sliders, i.e. if you want
to scan darker you now have to move the
