This makes my Ubuntu installation hard to use after a day of use.

Is there any workaround for this? Any help or pointer would be

Same here. The memory usage grows and grows. Currently it's at 1,4 GB
but yesterday I had about 3,4 GB.

I'm having the same problem on Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS.
gsd-xsettings is the reason my system is even fully filling the SWAP. Is there 
any possibility to debug this?
