This happens only sometimes, it can happen after the laptop resumes from hibernation, but sometimes it happens if the wlan adapter cannot connect to a network, sometimes even happens after the computer has been under very heavy load for some time. Restarting the Network Manager solves the problem, and the wireless connection works normally again.
