Simply double click on the file, it should be edited in a special
Editor. This editor will allow you to check the files to add (their
types are automatically recognized).
when double clicking the file, no special editor opens, just the normal
text editor. Should I file an issue?

Maybe you're seeing this issue:

that is rotated left.

You should have an Extension properties editor entry in the Open
with menu. Here is a screenshot of this editor:
