By "conventional" I think you mean "Linux" or anything with a reasonable
GNU toolchain and we all know that won't happen
FTR this works only where we haven't modified build inputs such as
configure.in - that is true of 1.6.0 -> 1.6.1 -> 1.6.2 ... It should not
have changed, thankfully.
