Nigel Jones resolved ATLAS-944.

Resolution: Fixed
The original test is now repeatedly working.
The potential for tests to timeout on slower systems remains, though I've not
seen it recently. Since that specific issue is covered in ATLAS-455 I am going
to close off this one for now, and we can consider ATLAS-455 on it's own merits
