I had a similar issue and I think the memory leak was also responsible for this
behaviour.

On second thought this was not due to the memory leak. I remember that I was
facing the same caching issue as you resulting in nullpointers and
unpredictable behaviour .. heck... even wrong files got served so I fixed it
perhaps less elegant by switching to noncaching in my sitemap.
