All comments indicate that the bit raised is index 0. This should be updated
for each constant to use the appropriate index from 0-7:
Mask with bit zero-based index [0-7] raised.

but to no avail. Also my familiarity with R is less. So I am not completely
sure how to make the test cases for this distribution.

I think, that Gilles is right in pointing out, that the current policy
(accept patches only with explicit, or implicit, acceptance of
contribution under the ASL) clashes somehow with Github PR's in that
it is difficult to assume implicit acceptance in that cases.
However, I don't think that this
