I will verify with Trademarks@. At the worst it will have to redirect to
royale.apache.org, so I don't think you have to wait. It would be nice to
have that domain no matter what.

Re: Royale website and domain registration

2017-09-22 Thread Carlos Rovira
Thanks Dany,

if you guys see ok ni make a pool to get the .io domain that's fine with
me, I'll be donating as well few bucks
Maybe we should know first what's the final price and see open a thread for
it asking the community for some little donation. Of course I suppose that
the rest of years will be down to a normal price of 5 to 10€ or something
like that.

The other (more easy option) is to go with .app or .web if people like it
as you.

We can also be '4chan cool' and get roy4le.com for only $12, which I'll

Let's wait what do others think about donating something.

I'm not good in case of domain registration, but royale.io is registered by
someone else and we still can register it for us ? I checked in my domain
operator and I see price about 30$.

Hi Erik,

for me insert the "4" is not recommended since complicates too much the
domain. And "royale.rocks" is better, but I think other options are more
sync with our mission (.web, .app, )

Erik,

If it is connected (royale.as) to something majestic it is even better. :)

Re: Royale website and domain registration

2017-09-22 Thread Carlos Rovira
Hi Erik,

This is my order of preference:

- royale.io is the best option, but as you said is expensive, so we must
give up with that :(

- royale.as: we should check if it comes with some negative meaning. I
don't see nothing, but maybe you guys that are more native in English
language could see some problems. Aside from that could be problematic to
have a domain that is supposed to be designated to a country? (Samoa
Americana)

Other top level options available (before going with more complex names)
that could fit our purposes:

* royale.app<-- ok we are not an App, but with Royale people will build
Apps ;)
* royale.web   <-- pretty generic, isn't it?
* royale.dev<-- dev, I assume this stands for "development", something
more related to us

maybe still valid, but not as good as the other ones?:
* royale.inc
* royale.wow
* royale.now
* royale.art

What do you think?

Re: Royale website and domain registration

2017-09-22 Thread Erik de Bruin
'royale.as' is available here:

https://www.nic.as/

But it is $100 for 2 years, payable up front. That will require some
crowdfunding as well. And if we go that route, we might as well go for the
.io which is way cooler ;-)

Hi -

It would be more likely to work if the Domain were purchased and then donated
to the ASF with sufficient funds to renew it for N years.

 Hi Carlos,

I agree that is a game we should not play. Even if we can get the
 domain
for $200, I still don't like putting money in the hands of the
 squatters.
It would not surprise me if they then went out and registered a bunch
 of
similar domains and tried to hit us up for those as well.

I doubt Apache Trademarks would allow a third party to use
apacheroyale.. We might want to grab that domain, but it would
probably have to point directly to royale.a.o.

I don't think royale.as is taken, the registration fee is just higher.
And again, we can grab more than one domain. I would like us to settle
 on
at least one so we can make sure Apache Trademarks will ok having a
third-party use that domain. It is going to be an exception to the
 rule.

IMO, we should not use .com. We might want to grab it and point to
something else, but our main pages should reflect that we are
 non-profit.

 My 2 cents,

Initial response from trademarks was not encouraging. Is it possible for
Erik to "own" the domain and redirect it to Carlos's server? That might
satisfy Trademarks that we could rescind Carlos's use of that domain if
Carlos stopped conforming to trademark policy. Apparently there have been
problems like that for other projects.

Thoughts?

That is the best way. We buy the cool sounding domains and simply redirect
them to royale.apache.org. There are hosting providers who charge $0 for
just hosting. We will just need to pay for the domain re-registration
every year.

Hi Folks,

At yesterday's board meeting, the Apache Software Foundation Board of
Directors approved Tom Chiverton as the new PMC Chair for Apache Flex.
Tom's new title is VP Apache Flex. Tom is taking over for me.

I think it may be a few more days before the transition is complete. The

Congratulations Tom! And thanks again for volunteering to chair this

Re: Royale website and domain registration

2017-09-22 Thread Alex Harui
AIUI, royale.io is owned by a squatter and the price STARTS at $199. I
haven't tried to buy a domain from a squatter, but I wouldn't be surprised
if the price suddenly goes up. And then beyond that, I think you may have
to still pay some other place to register the domain.

Yes, royale.as can be associated with "royal pain in the ass" but the "as"
was good enough for spoon.as back in the day.

Royale.web would be fine with me. And we could grab other TLDs too, we
don't have to choose one.

My question is, is it worth it? Is royale.io going to pay off in some way
$100 better than royale.as which would pay off $88 better than say,
royaleapps.org or royalesdk.org?

Thanks,
-Alex

Re: Royale website and domain registration

2017-09-22 Thread Alex Harui
Hi Carlos,

I agree that is a game we should not play. Even if we can get the domain
for $200, I still don't like putting money in the hands of the squatters.
It would not surprise me if they then went out and registered a bunch of
similar domains and tried to hit us up for those as well.

I doubt Apache Trademarks would allow a third party to use
apacheroyale.. We might want to grab that domain, but it would
probably have to point directly to royale.a.o.

I don't think royale.as is taken, the registration fee is just higher.
And again, we can grab more than one domain. I would like us to settle on
at least one so we can make sure Apache Trademarks will ok having a
third-party use that domain. It is going to be an exception to the rule.

IMO, we should not use .com. We might want to grab it and point to
something else, but our main pages should reflect that we are non-profit.

My 2 cents,
-Alex

2017-09-22 Thread Carlos Rovira
I think Om's offer is very generous, but for what Alex said, we could end
paying 3 or 4 times 100$ plus the real parking. For me that seems a game we
should not play...

I think the more easy and best option right now is "royale.web" or ".app"
(if .as is taken, that is what it seems right?).

We should exhaust the "royale." options before enter composed options.
For composed names, I think people would end trying first "apacheroyale.com"
(or.org, or .io, or whatever) that are all available before considering
adding "sdk" or "framework" for example.
