versions of solr. But still end up getting HTTP ERROR 400.

to a field that exists -- from your
error, I'm guessing it points to the same thing in the example:
{code:xml}
defaultSearchFieldtext/defaultSearchField
{code}
but you don't have that in your schema. Change it to 'translation' or some
other field in your schema
