[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-10039) LatLonPointSpatialField

David Smiley commented on SOLR-10039:
-

I might get a bit of time to share some performance numbers; although it's a
bit of a forlorn conclusion that of course it's faster given the Lucene nightly
benchmarks: https://home.apache.org/~mikemccand/geobench.html

> The fastest and most efficient spatial field for point data in Lucene/Solr is
> {{LatLonPoint}} in Lucene's sandbox module.  I'll include
> {{LatLonDocValuesField}} with this even though it's a separate class.
> LatLonPoint is based on the Points API, using a BKD index. It's multi-valued
> capable. LatLonDocValuesField is based on sorted numeric DocValues, and thus
> is also multi-valued capable (a big deal as the existing Solr ones either
> aren't or do poorly at it). Note that this feature is limited to a
> latitude/longitude spherical world model. And furthermore the precision is
> at about a centimeter -- less precise than the other spatial fields but
> nonetheless plenty good for most applications. Last but not least, this
> capability natively supports polygons, albeit those that don't wrap the
> dateline or a pole.
> I propose a {{LatLonPointSpatialField}} which uses this.  Patch & details

[jira] [Updated] (SOLR-10039) LatLonPointSpatialField

2017-03-04 Thread David Smiley (JIRA)

 [
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-10039?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
 ]

David Smiley updated SOLR-10039:

Attachment: SOLR_10039_LatLonPointSpatialField.patch

New patch:
* indexed & docValues are now properly configurable
* tested geodist() with this field, and ascending/descending.

I think it's ready, but I want to expand the patch to add this field type to
our example configs in at least every file that already includes a spatial
field, ordered just ahead of them so users are more likely to use this one.

Query by polygon is left as a future TODO.

[jira] [Comment Edited] (SOLR-10086) Add Streaming Expression for Kafka Streams

2017-03-04 Thread Dennis Gove (JIRA)

Dennis Gove edited comment on SOLR-10086 at 3/5/17 2:01 AM:

I'm developing this under a different project, so I dunno if the conversation
should occur here or elsewhere, but to keep everyone in the loop, here's what
I'm thinking about for the expression for a Kafka Producer.

{code}
kafkaProducer(
  ,
  topic=,
  bootstrapServers=,
  key=, // optional, if not provided then no key used when sending
record
  keyType=[string,long,double,boolean], // only required if using key and can't
figure out from key param (knowing long or double is tricky)
  value= // optional, if not provided then whole tuple as json
string is used
  valueType=[string,long,double,boolean], // only required if can't figure out
from value param (knowing long or double is tricky)
  partition=, // optional, if not provided then no partition used
when sending record
)
{code}

Anything that is is allowed to be any valid StreamEvaluator, such as
{code}
raw("foo") // raw value "foo"
"foo" // value of field foo
add(foo, bar) // value of foo + value of bar
{code}

There are other parameters allowed with a Kafka v0.10.x producer, such as
{code}
 props.put("acks", "all");
 props.put("retries", 0);
 props.put("batch.size", 16384);
 props.put("linger.ms", 1);
 props.put("buffer.memory", 33554432);
{code}

These could be handled like the parameters in a Search Stream, where any
parameters not explicitly known are just passed along. We could do that here so
people can set whatever parameters they want on the publisher and we don't have
to keep updating our supported list as the Kafka lib version changes.

[jira] [Updated] (SOLR-10105) JDBCStream should be able to load driver from runtime lib

Kevin Risden updated SOLR-10105:

Description:
Currently the JDBCStream uses Class.forName() to load the driver class. This
should be improved to try to use the classloader from runtimeLib and the blob
store API like SOLR-10087. It may be possible to do something like
Class.forName(driverClassName, true, core.getMemClassLoader()) just need to
figure out how to get a reference to the core.

The relevant code is here:

I think this is resolved with SOLR-8593. Calcite is checking valid columns
before executing the plan.

> Currently you can delete a replica through a small red X in the Admin UI
> Collections tab. So you can delete all the replicas inside a shard, but you
> cannot delete the whole shard, i.e. call the DELETESHARD Collection API.
> Add a button for this. This is useful for cleaning up e.g. after calling
> SPLITSHARD.

[jira] [Updated] (SOLR-10205) Evaluate and reduce BlockCache store failures

2017-03-04 Thread Yonik Seeley (JIRA)

 [

 ]

Yonik Seeley updated SOLR-10205:

Attachment: SOLR-10205.patch

OK, here's an update to the tests I'm using. Some changes:
- BlockCache now only tries calling cleanUp the next time through the loop
(i.e. needs to fail to find a block first)
- only call cleanUp if map size >= number_of_blocks (as opposed to max
configured size of the map... this makes a difference when reserved_blocks>1)
- test estimates number of queries to use in the next test round based on time
so far
- test exits by itself after a given amount of time (1hr is what I'm testing
with)

> (BlockCache.store call) can fail, making caching less effective. We should
> evaluate the impact of this storage failure and potentially reduce the number
> of storage failures.
> The implementation reserves a single block of memory. In store, a block of
> memory is allocated, and then a pointer is inserted into the underling map.
> A block is only freed when the underlying map evicts the map entry.
> This means that when two store() operations are called concurrently (even
> under low load), one can fail. This is made worse by the fact that
> concurrent maps typically tend to amortize the cost of eviction over many
> keys (i.e. the actual size of the map can grow beyond the configured maximum
> number of entries... both the older ConcurrentLinkedHashMap and newer
> Caffeine do this). When this is the case, store() won't be able to find a
> free block of memory, even if there aren't any other concurrently operating
> stores.

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-9575) Initialize an empty solr-home

Jan Høydahl commented on SOLR-9575:
---

Just committed a fix to SOLR-10088 which at least makes the install script do
the right thing.

So what's the next step for this issue? Perhaps a compromise could be a sys
prop to force init of SOLR_HOME? E.g. {{-Dsolr.home.init=true}}? So the default
would be false as today, but it would be possible to start Solr on a new HOME
with one command as David requests.

> The user may not want to use Solr's default solr-home dir location -- most
> likely to use a separate disk. If you do this, there are two main problems:
> * solr.xml & zoo.cfg aren't there
> * configsets aren't there
> Of course you could copy it manually but that's an extra step, and it's
> particularly annoying to add this step to a Docker setup. Docker is all the
> rage these days, and for good reason. If I mount a volume at
> /opt/solr/server/solr then it basically masks this part of the built-in Solr
> image (thus making configsets completely invisible) and points to some place
> that will be empty. Solr obviously complains. I could set the solr-home to
> some other path that I mount, but Solr would still complain about an empty
> solr-home -- no solr.xml
> If solr-home is empty, and if it's a dir other than the default solr-home,
> then I think the solr-home should be initialized with solr.xml and zoo.cfg
> copied from the default solr-home. I think configsets should be referenced
> from the default solr-home if there is no configsets dir in solr-home.

Steve Loughran commented on SOLR-9952:
--

# use s3a:// over s3n://, as s3a is maintained, way better these days, bug
reports will be looked at. etc/
# so you can drop jets3t as a dependency: s3a depends on the AWS lib, and a
version of jackson compatible with it (key troublespot there).
I don't know enough about your test runner to understand the tests properly,
but I don't seen anything to run away from. Do bear in mind that listings can
take time to be consistent with your writes to s3; always good for the tests to
spin & sleep awaiting their final state, rather than give up immediately

Yeah, it was an accidental merge commit which I had to revert. Hope

(not directly relevant to the topic, but I do have an empty
https://github.com/arafalov/solr-contributor-guide )

The problem with writing the book for Lucene/Solr is that the project
moves too fast for conventional print time. I kept having to rewrite
first 3 chapters completely because of the rapid changes.

If anybody is masochistic, I would recommend taking a smaller slice of
the project and writing about that in an intense spike and
self-publishing. I could offer a couple of Solr titles that I have on
the back-burner .

Regards,
   Alex.
P.s. There are no developer guides. Worse, there are no "pain point
guides either". Perhaps if somebody started the "pain-points" one, we
could then build the "developer guide" on top of it.
P.p.s. There is a "working with git for Lucene/Solr repo" guide
somewhere actually. But that's different. Also, consider using a
shallow git clone when getting the repo. Latest Git still allows to
commit from that and you may save yourself some significant
bandwidth/disk space.
