CVE-2018-1308: XXE attack through Apache Solr's DIH's dataConfig request parameter Severity: Major Vendor: The Apache Software Foundation Versions Affected: Solr 1.2 to 6.6.2 Solr 7.0.0 to 7.2.1 Description: The details of this vulnerability were reported to the Apache Security mailing list. This vulnerability relates to an XML external entity expansion (XXE) in the `=` parameter of Solr's DataImportHandler. It can be used as XXE using file/ftp/http protocols in order to read arbitrary local files from the Solr server or the internal network. See [1] for more details. Mitigation: Users are advised to upgrade to either Solr 6.6.3 or Solr 7.3.0 releases both of which address the vulnerability. Once upgrade is complete, no other steps are required. Those releases disable external entities in anonymous XML files passed through this request parameter. If users are unable to upgrade to Solr 6.6.3 or Solr 7.3.0 then they are advised to disable data import handler in their solrconfig.xml file and restart their Solr instances. Alternatively, if Solr instances are only used locally without access to public internet, the vulnerability cannot be used directly, so it may not be required to update, and instead reverse proxies or Solr client applications should be guarded to not allow end users to inject `dataConfig` request parameters. For that case it is easier to use the builder, and they already can. What you need is a way to pass a pre-authenticated userId down to Solr? Another question is why Basic Auth should be hardcoded in our clients and requests when other (more modern and secure) authentication mechanisms are not present, other than through plugins? A way to improve this could be for {{SolrRequest}} to store a set of generic HTTPHeaders instead of basicAuthUser/Pass. We could provide static utility methods to add header for BasicAuth as well as other kind of headers. It turns out the {{SegmentCommitInfo}} APIs for setting the file names rewrite to their segment name, so it's a non issue. Maybe we need a better test that actually changes the segment name, to see this fix is not sufficient? The comments in the code describe the algorithm, but basically we are only interested in edges that actually intersect or cross the travel planes. The reason for above/below planes is to be able to accurately count links even when some polygon edges are wholly or in part contained within the envelope. So it is immaterial that an edge crosses only one or the other envelope planes; that is the whole point of having the envelope planes, in fact. But we do assume that the envelope is narrow enough that an edge that ends inside of it must intersect either the travel plane or the above/below planes; that assumption may be incorrect. You can configure a default block replication factor but you can also create files with a specific replication factor. The problem in Solr is that some parts take the default replication factor as it is defined on the HDFS name node and some take the default. The default is 3 unless you tell Solr that you have a local HDFS configuration (using solr.hdfs.confdir). So when you set the default HDFS replication factor (done on the name node) to 1 Solr still ends up creating files that want to have a replication factor of 3. In case you are using a small HDFS test setup that only has one node (data node to be exact) then your blocks are still being created but they are under recplicated. When you tell SolrCloud to use a replicationFactor of 3 then Solr creates 3 copies of the collection files in HDFS, just like it does in the local case. So yes, in your case one could saw that the data exists 9 times. One could also see Solr on HDFS like Solr on a shared RAID filesystem. In RAID the files are however all replicated in the same way while in HDFS the replication factor of the files can be different and changed dynamically. In my opinion the only problem is that Solr does not create the files in HDFS in the same way.
