Users with multiple surefire/failsafe executions in forkMode once may experience notable gains. http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/SUREFIRE-887 is also interesting, you may want to read the closing comments on that issue. Re: 3.0 beta 2/3/4 roadmap was Re: Merging in our Aether and Guice changes to Maven 3.x
+1 Emmanuel 2010/8/6 Arnaud Héritier aherit...@gmail.com Ok, Thus talking is good but doing is better ( I know I'm talking more than I'm doing :-) ) Could we have a consensus if we : - release now the trunk as a beta 2 without Guice and Aether. With that we'll have a solid base to compare future changes with. We know it is stable and it is better than beta 1 (it solves some issues like for the site plugin and also in // builds). If the vote is called now we can deliver it to users for Monday. - just after the beta2 release we merge changes required for Aether and Guice and we start the release process for a beta 3 we'll deliver at the end of next week. With that we'll try to receive feedback from users and we'll easily validate if problems are related to Guice or Aether by comparing results with both versions. At the end of the month we can push out a new beta with all fixes we'll have. It will be always possible to decide to remove Aether if some of you have a better solution or aren't satisfied by the change (I would prefer to have done that in an alpha releases cycle but now we are in beta we cannot come back in rear). WDYT ? I think it is important to push out new releases to show to our community that we are always active and we are going in the good direction. Arnaud On Aug 5, 2010, at 11:06 PM, Dennis Lundberg wrote: Hi all Some very important questions have been asked regarding Jason's proposal. I usually let my first impressions sink in a bit before I reply. That often help to make my comments more about the facts and less about the feelings, and we've seen a lot of feelings in this thread. The first thing I would like to happen is that we release 3.0-beta-2 *without* merging the proposed code. There are two reasons for this. 1. The Site Plugin, which most of you know is something that I've worked quite a lot on, is currently in limbo. On one hand we have the stable 2.x trunk of the plugin which works with Maven 2, but not with Maven 3. We also have a 3.0-SNAPSHOT branch of the plugin, thanks to Olivier and Hervé. But that currently don't work with any released version of Maven because of a bug in Maven 3.0-beta-1. In order to gain momentum and field testing for Maven Site Plugin 3.0 it needs a stable version of Maven to work with. There are too few people working on the Site Plugin, and if it needs to be rewritten yet again there is a risk that it will never be ready. 2. Release early, release often. Give the users a choice here. They can choose to use Maven 3.0-beta-2 which will work much like beta-1 did, but with lots of bugs fixed. Or a few weeks later they can use 3.0-beta-3 the proposed code changes merged in. If the new stuff doesn't work, for whatever reason, they can switch back to beta-2 while they wait for a bug fixed beta-4. As for they proposed code bases I am not qualified to make detailed comments, so my comments will be very high level. Guice IIUC this means that we would replace one (external) IOC container with another (external) IOC container. If the bar for being allowed to participate in the development of Guice is at the same level as it has been for Plexus, then I have no problem with this switch. I am +1 on integrating the Guice code after beta-2 has been released. Aether One thing that I really think has been successful here at Maven has been when we have set up proper APIs that abstracts the implementation and let the users pick a suitable implementation for their needs. Two subprojects come to mind: SCM and Wagon. If the API part of Aether is anything like that, then that's a good thing in my book. I haven't looked at the code, only the high level presentation, but I have high confidence in those who have worked on it. Having the API hosted outside of Apache is fine by me if it means that more projects will use it. The more the merrier. When it comes to the implementation I'm undecided. It does mean that we will make an integral part of Maven external, which can lead to problems with issue tracking etc, as pointed out by others. On the other hand it makes sense to use the collective knowledge of the people who is responsible for the API, to also work together on implementations. Perhaps the Maven repository implementation can be moved back to the Maven project, when things have settled down. I am +0 on integrating Aether after beta-2 has been released. I'll let others with more insights decide. On 2010-08-03 20:21, Jason van Zyl wrote: Hi, We have two major pieces that we, Sonatype, would like to merge into Maven 3.x trunk. Re: Suggested change to site / release
+1 for all Emmanuel On Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 7:48 AM, Brett Porter br...@apache.org wrote: Hi, I've committed some changes that I'd like reviewed to go forward with which makes Maven releases easier. 1) see http://maven.apache.org/docs/2.0.11-RC1-SNAPSHOT/release-notes.html (may not be present yet due to proxying), and relevant commits in that RC branch 2) see commits in site branch. The basic approach is this: * push all release notes into docs/$version/release-notes.html instead of the consolidated older format and add a page to list them in order * move the release notes for all future versions of Maven into the Maven tree itself. This means that you can create/edit them as they are a snapshot without messing up the site, and publish them automatically with the release. * set the release up to publish the above site and javadoc/xref at release perform time (this is before the vote, but as it is versioned it is not going to be live) * consolidate all version specification for the main site in pom.xml, so only those properties need to be edited (I removed 2.1.x, so we have the currentStableVersion - 2.2.0, current20xVersion - 2.0.10, and a list of all releases for generating the previous release notes, + corresponding dates for the current releases) * remove use of symlink for current and instead filter those properties into .htaccess This means that to do a release, assuming it works (which I'll test with 2.0.11), it's only the release:prepare / perform cycle + upload binaries to www.apache.org (to be automated) + site/pom.xml edit and site-deploy. The downside of the separate site approach is that the release notes drop the main navigation (but there is a Documentation link back to the main site). I don't think this is a bad thing. Any objections to continuing this approach with Maven 2.2.x, and perhaps making similar attempts on the plugins? Re: Using GIT as the canonical repository for Maven 3.x
We have already a long thread with lot of things so I won't repeat some questions. I'm +0 to move to GIT but -1 to go outside of the Apache infrastucture. Emmanuel On Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 7:00 PM, Jason van Zyl jvan...@sonatype.com wrote: Hi, Maven was the first project at Apache to use JIRA and though there was a great deal of concern/noise about using JIRA it ultimately proved to be a decent system and now lots of projects are using JIRA. I'm not particularly interested in mandating everything in Maven to use GIT but I would like to pilot the use of GIT as the canonical repository for Maven 3.x and wanted to see what others thought. I believe that GIT is going to be the dominant SCM in the very near future because the distributed nature is so much more inline with the way OSS should work. Anyone can get a complete copy of our work and it is much easier to absorb those changes. There are many examples now on the net demonstrating projects that have switched to GIT and their communities have flourished as a result. We are also seeing the rise of Java implementations of GIT and to me this means there are going to be an order of magnitude more developers able to work on the core system. JGIT, which is being developed primarily by Shawn Pearce @ Google, is awesome. I actually have been participating in helping with the build for JGIT and I've been working with Peter Royal to create a MINA SSHD wrapper around JGIT using JSecurity for authentication and it's so easy. Peter cranked out a working prototype in 3 hours. This simply is not possible with C-based systems like Subversion which is essentially a closed box or generally uninteresting to Java developers. JGIT along with Gerrit (an awesome code review tool Shawn Pearce is working on) is being used by the Google Android team and it's working well (I'm meeting with Shawn Pearce today to chat) so I think we have evidence this works. I'd be happy if everyone here wanted to use GIT but I do believe that I have a better chance of getting people involved with Maven 3.x if I can get the canonical repository in GIT. In the Maven project we set precedent with JIRA and now I would like to do that with GIT. If Apache Infrastructure doesn't want to support this then I feel we can do the same thing we did with JIRA until they catch up. I think having a canonical repository at Github is safe, well backed up and maintained and I don't think we would have to worry about anything there. They have full-time staff and a slew of engineers so I would even argue that a repository at Github would be just as safe and well maintained as a Subversion repository here. Any thoughts? On Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 3:00 PM, Jason van Zyl [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On 17-Jul-08, at 11:12 PM, Wendy Smoak wrote: I gather this is the reason that the commits (r677787 to r677789) for the Maven Artifact release that Oleg just called a vote on look like they were done by Jason? I'm really not comfortable with svn credentials being shared like that. They are not being shared. Hudson is running as a sand-boxed user where I have setup my credentials, so that the releases can be fully automated where the same set of attributes are used across the board. I tested my credentials, they work. The release plugin is not very graceful when things at the SVN bork. I was striving for a QA'd process so I took into account everything. The machine is secure and the account is secure. So now that you know that do you still think it's a problem? FWIW, Continuum lets you enter your svn credentials when you do a release, and uses those for the related commits. It's not relevant to me what Continuum can or cannot do at this point. The community took a severe hit and Hudson has way more active developers and it's easier to develop features because it has an extensible API. You can look at the charts. The core group for Continuum consists of one person: olamy. Contrast that with the core group in Hudson which is at least 10 people. Not totally right because we changed the svn repo. Old values are there : http://svnsearch.org/svnsearch/repos/ASF/search?path=%2Fmaven%2Fcontinuum As you can see, Continuum doesn't have only one developer. You are active on continuum like the majority of Hudson developers and the core group in Hudson is one developer too. Just my 2 cents for some values that are totally out of topic!!! Emmanuel http://svnsearch.org/svnsearch/repos/ASF/search?path=%2Fcontinuum http://svnsearch.org/svnsearch/repos/HUDSON/search So it's nice to say Continuum has this or that, but who's going to fix it? Kohsuke and company push out releases super frequently and sometimes even every week. There's just no comparison in my mind. I have limited time I simply can't afford to invest anything in Continuum. So for one feature Continuum might have I think what I have setup with the sandboxed Hudson user is a reasonable compromise. As a policy we can decide as a PMC what's acceptable but the setup I have is secure as far as I'm concerned. Also I've had 7 people actually take the Hudson bundle and run the Maven 2.1 ITs. That's never happened before and it's because Hudson is so easy to make a bundle, unpack it with the Maven jobs and boom you have a fully functional Maven environment. -- Wendy On Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 8:47 AM, John Casey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The rest of this release infrastructure has simply been configuration of hudson and nexus - nexus, to provide a staging ground for releases - to configure release jobs that deploy to this staging location instead of the real release repository...just generalizing on configuration that we all have in our personal settings.xml files by now.
